With Harry Moran stepping away from the club, the time has come for Benalla All Blacks’ new coach to make his mark.
The Panthers recently announced Nich Spencer would take on the head role next year, with the half-back set for double duties on and off the field.
Spencer seems to be taking the new role in his stride.
“It’s pretty exciting and a bit nerve-racking,” Spencer said.
“I’ve already seen it’s a full-time commitment.
“I’ve just been learning everything that goes on behind the scenes.
“It’s been flat out, you’re always down here (at the club) and meeting with the blokes.”
With next season set to be his fourth year at the club, after coming over from Goulburn Valley League neighbour Benalla, Spencer said it was a fairly easy decision to accept the role.
He cited his family history - with his great-grandfather a former president – and his love of the club as the main reasons to take on the role.
“The club put it to me,” Spencer said.
“I’m going to embrace the opportunity.”
After the Panthers’ campaign came to a close on Saturday, Spencer is set for an active off-season as he looks ahead to a return to finals football.
“We’ve re-signed 95 per cent of our list,” Spencer said.
“But we’re in the market for a big forward.
“We’ll be doing some heavy recruitment and are looking to replace the nine to 10 blokes we lost at the start of the season.
“That’s up to me.”
