Last Saturday, the Birchip Watchem Bulls travelled over to Charlton Park for the final home and away round of 2016. For the Seniors and Under 16’s, the double chance was on the line depending on the outcome of their games. Fortunately, the CFC was able to win three of our four matches on the day which saw all football sides bar the Under 13’s earn the right to compete in a 2nd Semi Final on the 3rd of September. This is a credit to all our coaches, players and support staff but it’s only an opportunity at this point which must be grasped with both hands like a Rhys Thompson contested mark!
Last Saturday night it was a pleasure to see and listen to John Ledwidge, Ron Field and the players from the 1966 Premiership who held a reunion. Thanks to all who attended and helped organise a great night!
The Seniors got going early with some hard running and clean marks by Jimmy Baird which saw him post two early goals. Birchip answered with their typical contested footy and some nice linking handballs which enabled them to trail by only 3 points at the first break despite having two more scoring shots. Three goals to one in the 2nd term in the Navies favour helped us maintain a 13 point lead at the long break. Accuracy was helping our cause as we kicked 10 goals before scoring a behind. Our biggest positive was our pressure around the ball and our tackling by our mids and others which helped set up opportunities going forward. Matt Giri, Cody Gunn and James McGrath were the beneficiaries of this pressure, kicking three goals each. Birchip continued to challenge all day but we were able to maintain a buffer and win by 21 points.
The Reserves got back on the winners list and finished the year on top of the ladder after recording a 73 point win. After quarter time, the Navies opened up their running game through Sean O’Connor, Zane Sullivan, Danny Wright, Matt Noonan and Shaun Bowles while Damo McIntyre again battled hard in the ruck. Four goals to Kris Clifford and three each to Nathaniel Holmes Brown and Zane Sullivan helped extend the lead at each break.
It was a tight affair early in the Under 16’s with both sides on 1.2 apiece at the first change. The Navies were able to break the shackles after this however, kicking sixteen goals to four in the next three quarters and run out comfortable victors. 5 goals each to Trent Cossar and Ziah Tauli i helped set up the win while Anthony Miller, Zac Tauali i, Charlie Patullo and Kyle Postlethwaite were among those to impress in a good team performance.
The Under 13’s couldn’t find a win in their final game but finished off the year as they started with a determination and willingness to never give in that has impressed all around the club. The boys have shown clear improvement from the previous season and it is a credit to themselves, coaches Kris Dixon and Anthony Collins, their Parents and supporters. Most of our boys will be going around again next season in the same age group so there is plenty of improvement still to come from our junior Navies!
