Last Saturday we played Birchip Watchem and the football sides were able to come home with two victories from the four games played. The Seniors got jumped early by a Bulls outfit who were red hot from the first bounce. The Bulls kicked five goals to one in the opening term, forcing the Navy Blues to play catch up footy for the rest of the game. Charlton were within striking distance throughout the middle part of the game, with a three goal margin the norm, but inaccuracy and some below par defensive work from the Navy Blues allowed the Bulls to display their talents and hold the upper hand. Birchip put the game beyond doubt with early final quarter goals and won by 35 points. On the positive side, Aaron Walklate showed the determination required all day while Tom Finlay continues to find his groove after a long layoff from footy. Luke Mulquiny, Sam O’Connor, Kieran Sait and Daniel Thiesz also performed well.
The Reserves continued their good form and cruised to an 85 point win. The Navies had 28 scoring shots with a 50% accuracy rate. Jason Ainsworth was a standout, and with his hard running and physicality, he won plenty of possessions. He was well aided by Matt Noonan, Marcus Campbell and Josh Sullivan while the backline of Viv Cossar, Joe Durie, Troy Sait, Ryan Moloney, Nick McCallum and Matt Winsall gave the Bulls little opportunity when the ball went into their attacking zone.
The Under 16’s controlled the majority of their match keeping Birchip Watchem goalless to three quarter time before the Bulls staged a mini comeback. A forty point lead at the final break allowed our boys to claim a 15 pint victory despite being unable to score in the last term. Matt and Jed Thompson and Cobi and Will Fitzpatrick all had strong performances as did Wally Townsend and Nathaniel Holmes Brown who kicked three before being injured.
Like the Seniors, the Under 13’s went down by 35 points against Birchip Watchem. Bailey Dixon kicked a late goal for the Navies while Elliot Fitzpatrick, Nick Thompson, Angus Johnstone, Pat Soulsby, Darby Fitzpatrick and Fergus Bourke all had solid games.
