The Willetton Blues are 2013 Drew Banfield Colts premiers after a 24 point win over Scarborough in Saturday's Grand Final at Medibank Stadium to claim the club's 7th premiership.
Conditions at one of the WAFL's premier facilities better resembled a lake than a football field, which seemed to better suit the smaller Willetton line-up who went to the quarter time break with a 15 point lead. The Blues were also able to keep Scarborough scoreless in the opening term, a reversal of fortunes from the opening term of the 2nd Semi Final a fortnight ago. Josh Coleman kicked the opening goal of the game, while Brandon Ellis kicked his first later in the quarter.
The Blues led by 13 points at the main break after Brandon Ellis' second goal came from some undisciplined play from Scarborough. John Lee was dumped heavily after a kick forward resulting in a scuffle, leaving 3 Blues players alone in the goal square with Ellis able to bang another home.
The lead was extended slightly at the final change, with the Blues turning for home with a 14 point lead. The Blues made the Eagles pay for their inaccuracy, kicking 2.1 to 1.6 in the premiership quarter, with goals from Ellis and Josh Kyle.
With a three quarter time lead and a heap of confidence, the Blues put Scarborough to the sword in the last, with Ellis kicking his 4th of the game and Josh Kyle adding 2 more goals in the final stanza to cue delerium at the final siren.
Josh "2chains" Kyle was named best on ground by the umpires following a sensational 3 goal effort, while the efforts of big men Brandon Ellis, Rick Wallis and Conrad Sloan in conditions not suited to the bigger players can not be ignored.
