Hello All,
A few weeks into home schooling and the weather has turned average, which makes the situation all the more difficult. There does looks to be some light at the end of the isolation tunnel however with the COVID-19 numbers reducing and some positive talk from the government yesterday regarding relaxing some of the restrictions with community sport in mind. Still a long way to go, however, we have received another update from the SMJFL and AFL which I wanted to share with you all.
As mentioned in the last update, the SMJFL are modelling around a July 12th start with the plan of a 4 week lead in prior to this kick off date. This is still far from locked in as it absolutely hinges on the government relaxing restrictions to the point where it allows for community sport. Fingers crossed this occurs sooner rather than later. If by chance the relaxation of restrictions is much swifter than expected then it’s possible that the July 12th date could be brought forward to an earlier date and with talks around lifting restrictions to a limit of 10 people as early as May 11 this is a possibility.
Discussions are also underway between AFL Victoria, Cricket Victoria and the State Government with the hope that the football season can be extended into October if required, which is a positive as this would maximise the number of weeks available for our rounds.
With this being said, it’s time to increase the fitness regime and ball handling skills again to ensure we are all ready to go once the green light has been given. Nick Thompson’s zoom workouts are starting to ramp up with some good numbers on Thursday and an extra skills session to be run on a Tuesday, so I encourage all of you (parents included) to jump onto the zoom sessions on a Tuesday and Thursday and get involved. We are also looking at running a couple of competitions amongst the teams to help wind up the activity and engagement, so keep an eye out for these.
To log onto the sessions, download the Zoom app or go to

On another positive note, the council is on track to have the Wellington reserve lighting upgrade completed by mid June, which will allow full training flexibility when we do return to training.
Please also remember the Toyota Good for Footy raffle as our only current fundraising avenue for those who can assist, and keep in mind all of our wonderful sponsors during this tough time. Go to https://toyotagoodforfooty.raffletix.com.au/wphawks?v=1 to buy tickets in the Toyota Good for Raffle – proceeds from every ticket sold come directly to the club.
Finally, can I please ask that we utilize this down time to ensure everyone is compliant with the SMJFL volunteers’ requirement of a valid working with children check (WWCC). Now is the time to get one if you do not already have one. These are critical, as without them you will not be able to volunteer on game day and without the required volunteers’, games cannot go ahead. So please jump on the following website and get things underway. We would love to have all parents with a valid WWCC. Go to https://www.workingwithchildren.vic.gov.au/…/a…/how-to-apply for information and to apply for your WWCC
It is time to get the runners out, get fired up and get some fitness under the belt (albeit still by yourselves) so that the mighty Waverley Park Hawks are ready to fire when the green light is given. Hopefully there is some more good news from the government on May 11.
Stay safe and stay well.
Regards,
Ryan
