Update from the Dodgers - return to play for junior basketball!

We have exciting news - Basketball ACT (BACT) has advised that the remainder of the 2021 Winter Season will be played out over the rest of the year under COVID Protection Protocols:

  • U10s - will recommence on 31 October (2 weeks prior to the rest of the age groups) and will play one game a weekend over four weeks. They will be playing their games on the outdoor courts at Belconnen Basketball Stadium for Round 17 and 18, on Sunday afternoons.

  • U12s, 14s, 16s and 19s - will recommence on the weekend of 12 November for the three remaining rounds and finals.

COVID protocols

BACT is finalising the protocols that will apply to the return to play. We expect them to be based on the protocols in place post the last lockdown. We will communicate these to all of our Club’s players and families ASAP after receipt from BACT.

Player return

It is important that we know the number of Dodgers juniors returning for the rest of the Winter Season, so we can manage any difficulties if teams are short of numbers. Could parents please discuss with your juniors as to whether they will return to play with their Dodgers team for the remaining rounds of the Season (please note there is no additional cost in doing so, as fees are already covered under your Winter Season registration).

Importantly, could the parents of Dodgers players in all our junior age groups (U10s to U19s) please complete our survey here by 5pm this coming Tuesday (19 October) at the latest, so we can meet deadlines set by BACT to advise them about returning teams. (If you are able to please complete the survey sooner rather than later that will really assist our volunteers in meeting BACT’s deadlines).

The survey responses will enable our Age Group Co-ordinators to work with coaches/managers to get an assessment on the number of returning players for each team.

Training recommencement

  • Hedley Beare Stirling - We are awaiting official advice from the ACT Government, but we remain hopeful we will have access to our 'home' gym at Hedley Beare for training, and also our uniform store, soon.
  • Stromlo HS, Alfred Deakin HS & Canberra College - Government school gyms will be closed for Term 4.
  • Wesley Church - we are awaiting further advice, but remain optimistic on being able to access the indoor court at this location.

BACT will be making 45 minute training session slots available for affected teams at Tuggeranong Stadium, to allow teams the opportunity to train twice prior to restarting the competition. We will continue to liaise with our training venues and BACT, and provide further advice on training arrangements through our Dodgers Age Group Coordinators in the coming weeks.

Summer season

BACT is planning to run some basketball competitions in January/February – it looks like it will be a blend of a short Summer Open season and 3x3 comps. As soon as we have more details we will share these with you. We are mindful that, given summer holidays and uncertainty about family travel plans, pulling this together could hold some challenges.

Winter Season 2022 - competition and trials

We are starting planning for the commencement of the Winter 2022 Season (which is likely to be in the 'long' season format we saw for the Winter season this year). The Winter 2022 season will start in late March 2022. We will provide you with more details on this as they come to hand.

Our plans for the Winter Season 2022 trials for U12-U19 players will be announced later this year – please keep an eye on your inbox and also on our website and Facebook page for details.

We look forward to seeing all our Dodgers back on court soon!
