Registrations to open soon for the Summer 2021 season of basketball

Hello to all Dodgers families new and old!

We hope you have been enjoying the Winter season of basketball!

Please find below an update on the exciting Summer 2021 season ahead of us (and please also check out the attached file for more information).

Basketball ACT will this year be trialling a new approach to Summer competitions, with plenty on offer to keep our juniors active over term 4 and the Summer period.

The Dodgers will soon be opening registrations for a short, 8-week season of basketball from October to November. We'll be entering teams into the new Junior Summer Open (same as the Junior Premier League played on Friday nights) and Junior Summer Social (Divisions 1-6 and Under 10s, played on Saturdays and Sundays).

There will also be a new Junior Summer Slam competition running on Saturday nights for elite juniors (run entirely by Basketball ACT) and additional 3x3 options for all.

Please note: players are only able to register in one 5x5 competition (5x5 being 5 players per team on a full court, ie. as per the current Winter competition). Players wishing to play multiple games per week are encouraged to play 3x3 (3 players per team, essentially on a half court) as well as in their respective junior 5x5 competition.

Junior Summer Slam is the top-tier junior competition for the summer season. This is being organised by Basketball ACT and will be run outside of the traditional club-based system. The Dodgers will not be entering teams into this competition (but some of our elite players will naturally nominate for the draft). It is being offered for u15's (players born 2007 and 2008) and u17's (born 2005 and 2006). Slam is a draft based competition, where nominated players will be put into a draft, with elite rep coaches selecting their teams on a discretionary basis.

Junior Slam will be played on Saturday evenings.

Junior Slam will be run directly by Basketball ACT.

Please visit the Basketball ACT website for further information about Junior Slam registrations and 3x3 registrations - (go to Juniors then Competitions).

Junior Summer Open is the second-tier junior competition for the summer season. It is being offered in traditional age groupings of u12s, u14s, u16s and u19s. Junior Summer Open is only for BACT member club-based teams (which includes the Dodgers).

All Junior Summer Open games will be played on a Friday night.

For the Dodgers, the Summer Open teams will be made up of our JPL and Division 1 players who don't nominate for (or do not make it into) Summer Slam. Teams will be selected on a discretionary basis by the Dodgers' current JPL Coaches and Age Group Coordinators in consultation with the Dodgers' Head of Player Development.

Junior Summer Social is the third-tier junior competition for the summer season. It is being offered for U10's, U12's, U14's, u16's and u19's. Junior Summer Social is open to both club and non-club based teams.

Junior Social competitions will be played on Saturdays and Sundays (depending on the age group and division). Teams will be selected based on performance in the 2021 Winter competition on a discretionary basis by the Dodgers' current Age Group Coordinators in consultation with the Dodgers' Head of Player Development and coaches, with an aim to maintain Winter team compositions where possible, dependent upon registrations received.

3x3 is an exciting new format showcased for the first time at the recent Tokyo Olympics and the Dodgers strongly encourages players and coaches to consider trying it out this summer. The Junior 3x3 Summer comprises a 5 Week 'tour' and a series of 1 Day 'Hustles'. While the Club will not be taking registrations or entering teams directly, we encourage our coaches and parents to form teams with existing teammates, enter under a Dodgers name and wear your Dodgers uniform in the comps. Juniors can also form and compete in non-club based social teams with friends and/or existing teammates.

Teams must play in matching numbered singlets. Dodgers kit can be worn in these competitions.

Junior 3x3 Tour

The 3x3 tour will run over 5 weeks in October and November.

Cost is $320 team registration plus $10 per player for an Individual Hustle Pass.

Match dates - Tuesdays (Under 17s and 19s) and Thursdays (Under 11s, 13s and 15s).

Junior 3x3 Hustles

3 x 3 Hustles are a series of one-day events that will run from September 2021 to April 2022, inclusive.

Cost is $150 team registration (per one-day Hustle) plus $10 per player for an Individual Hustle Pass (one off).

Match dates - 18 September, 6 November, 11 December, 29 January, 12 February and 9 April.

Further competition details are available at

BACT has confirmed there are no transfers being applied for this season. Therefore players from other clubs that are not fielding teams in the 5x5 competition can join the Dodgers for the Summer season without affecting their junior transfer status for the Winter comp 2022.

The Dodgers will accept all registrations during the registration period as usual. Late registrations will only be accepted to fill teams that are incomplete - this will be at the discretion of the club.

There will be no selection trials for Summer 2021 - the Dodgers will run a full selection trial when we regrade age divisions for the Winter Comp 2022.

Our Age Group Coordinators will form teams on a best effort basis, mainly using current playing divisions as a guide. For new players to the club who are U12 and above, please ensure you fill in the 'Previous Playing Experience' box on your registration form (a link to this form will be distributed as per the dates below).

Registrations Open: Please note that this has now been delayed from the originally intended registration opening date of 16 August, due to the current COVID situation - at this time, we expect to open registrations on or around 1 September.

Registrations Close: Midnight on Sunday 19 September

Club fee U10 - $120

Club fee U12-U19 - $130

BACT Affiliation fee (insurance) - $30

The Dodgers are currently in the process of transitioning to a new uniform supplier - we will be maintaining the same design so there will not be a requirement to purchase a new uniform. We are hopeful of having the new supplier in place soon, with a large range of additional merchandise offerings for purchase via an online shop.

Stay tuned for more details - we are hopeful we will have new uniforms and a new warm-up top for sale prior to the start of the new season. In the interim, for those who either have uniforms to donate or need a new playing kit for the Summer season, please email

The Dodgers are desperately seeking volunteers for a number of roles. Most roles are only a few hours a week (some even less) but covering those roles is a massive help to the club and our juniors playing basketball at the Dodgers.

If you can't coach, please join the Dodgers committee! We have a number of roles available.

If you can coach, please let us know...we need you!

Please email if you would like to help out your club!

If you have any questions please email

Teams train between 1 and 1.5 hours a week (depending on their division/competition) on Monday - Thursday (usually in the time range of 4:30pm to 8pm).

Our main training venues are Stromlo & Alfred Deakin High Schools, Canberra College and the Hedley Beare Centre at Stirling.

Returning coaches are given first preference on their existing training slots, but a good way to get your preferred training time from the slots available is to volunteer to coach for us! Please get in touch with us at if you have:

  • some basketball coaching/playing experience...or are keen to coach; and
  • (importantly) have a constructive, friendly and calm temperament

All of our coaches are required to hold a Working With Vulnerable People registration card (free to apply for if you don't already have one).

Please keep an eye on your inbox, our Facebook page and our website for further details, and for the registration link for the Summer 2021 season - we look forward to having your junior play for us!

Comment Guidelines: The SportsTG Network is made up of players, families and passionate sports followers like you who have a strong opinion about sport. That's great - we want you to have your say and share your thoughts with the world. However, we have a few rules that you must follow to keep it fun for all. Please don't be rude, abusive, swear or vilify others. Apart from some pretty serious sport sanctions, we also can ban you and report you if things get out of hand.
