A dark weekend for the Yarras, with just two wins in the Netball teams, whilst the footballers endured tough battles.
Division 9 girls took on Springvale Districts Blue team. With a shaky start, the girls needed to come out firing after quarter time to get back in the lead - and that they did. The defensive end turned over the ball beautifully, with Bri’s intercepts earning her Best On this week. Our mid-court worked tirelessly to bring the ball down to the shooters, who popped up goals left, right and centre. From being down at quarter time, to winning by 28 goals is something to be proud of. Top of the ladder with one round left, go Yarras! Springvale Districts Blue 23 to South Yarra 51.
C grade ladies took on Caufield. The Yarras came out of the blocks hard and it was 15 to 1 to the Yarras at the end of the first quarter. The girls showed their versatility by having some different combinations in the 2nd quarter. This week was a whole team effort with the defence end getting plenty of turn overs and the attacking end were able to capitalise on this. Emily Bacon was awarded best on ground for a solid performance in the goal circle, she was also able to adapt to the having different GAs out in front with Molly O’Bryan and new comer to the team Bel Prosser also putting in great performance. Special mention to Meg Howlett who’s connection with the shooters has become exceptional as the season has progressed. Overall a fantastic performance by the C grade girls who seem to have the same drive and determination no matter what the outcome of the game. The final score was Yarras 55 to Caufield 19.
B grade headed into this week’s clash with top of the table, Murrumbeena, anticipating a tough game. The Yarras fought hard but were no match for the well oiled Murrumbeena. Beth Griffiths was awarded best on court for her outstanding determination and consistently positive attitude. Bring on next week!! Murrumbeena 53 defeated South Yarra 29.
A Grade came up against 3rd placed Caulfield. Despite managing to defeat the higher ranked team in their first meeting, the girls were unable to settle into their usual rhythm from the very start. Unfortunately they weren’t able to match Caulfield’s intensity and were comfortably beaten on the day. Best on court went to Sarah Eade for her tireless running and defence all game. South Yarra 24 def by Caulfield 52
The Thirds once again put together a team of new and old faces for their match on Saturday against St. Pauls. A slow start allowed St. Pauls to take the early ascendency, but the Yarras were able to dominate the second half of the quarter, although inaccuracy meant they entered the break trailing. The second quarter told a similar story, although limiting St. Pauls to just the one goal meant the Yarras went in to half time trailing by just two points. Unfortunately, a goalless third quarter allowed St. Pauls to open a gap heading into the final term, and they were able to capitalise on this in the last quarter to record a 28-point win. The thirds now look forward to next week and beyond, where they will hopefully be able to welcome back some more of their regular players.
The Reserves was assembled by thirteen fill-ins including some familiar faces returning to wear the lion with pride on the sandy grounds at Heatherton. The Yarras had three players play thirds and another three to play seniors later that day. It was a treat to have midfielders, Mangoes and Dillon outperform their opponents. Whilst up forward, Buckets and Freeman were the focus of every kick going inside 50m. Gliddon dominated the ruck contests and was well aided by Caton. Gisold took mark of the day, climbing on the back of his Heatherton opponent and then, kicked a goal from outside the 50 metre arc. The Yarras lost by ten goals against fourth placed but it was a commendable performance by the Yarras given their circumstances.
The reason for the 13 fill-ins in the reserves was the fact the seniors had to make a side, going in to the game we knew we were always going to b up against it. Heatherton started strongly as their mids took control, with the flow of footy in to the forward line a couple of forwards looked like they were going to have a big day. The move of Jerry on to the most dangerous of these worked well but unfortunately the Yarras couldn’t match the running power and skill over the ground. In the end a comprehensive lose.
