C-Res took on Lyndhurst and welcomed two new players to the team this week with Steph and Charly popping on the maroon for the first time this season and we welcomed Laura who has made her comeback from injury! Knowing it was going to be a tough battle as Lyndhurst was sitting above us on the ladder, the girls knew they had to start strong and pull ahead in the first quarter, and that they did. Up 14 to 9 at the end of the first, we had a task on our hands to maintain the lead. Moving the ball through the mid-court like they had been playing as a side for weeks, Steph, Roms, Ruby and Laura fed the ball into Jules and Han who could not miss a shot if they tried too this week. Laura’s arms proved to be an absolute asset taking intercept after intercept through the mid and in defence. Unfortunately, a really shocking injury in the third saw Annie go down with a broken arm. The Yarras' took the win 40 to 28, securing 3rd position on the ladder. Our thoughts are with you Annie, we will miss you! Best on went to Jules for putting on an absolute clinic in the goal circle!
C grade took on Hallam. The game was very evenly matched from the start but the Yarras had taken the lead by the end of the 1st quarter. Mary Evans, Lily Rae and Alex Wright worked tirelessly in the defence end, creating multiple turns overs, however the transition from defence to attack was not as well oiled as it has been for C grade in other matches. The fresh legs of Meg Howeltt helped to keep the mid court fresh and the Yarra’s entered the final quarter with a 4 goal lead. In a final quarter that felt longer than the speech by pastor Michael Curry at the royal wedding, Hallam managed to bring the game back to even. The ball seemed to be going from end to end for an eternity, with Hallam scoring a goal just before the siren to take the heartbreaking win by 1 goal. Best on ground went to Emily Bacon for her impressive movement around the circle and her consistent shooting. Final score Yarras 36 to Hallam 37.
After having a week off, the B Grade girls took a little while to get back into their groove, facing strong competition St Kilda. Han Lyon and K Shev, although smothered in the circle by St Kilda’s strong defence, still managed to work the ring and pop those shots up. Due to their tireless work, the Yarras only trailed by 2 at quarter time. The Yarras came back on with a fighting spirit in the second but St Kilda pushed back with fierce determination, taking a steady lead over the Yarras. The half time oranges and lollies provided by Sarah Dalbosco seemed to be the fuel the Yarras needed to bite back against the Saints, regaining control in the 3rd quarter. Greta Stevens provided a stable centre court, running out the whole game in C and keeping the team spirit lifted. Sezzy D provided the kind of support any gal would want; effortlessly plucking a ball from the air before it went out and strategically tapping it to a team mate. Beth Griffiths played a versatile game switching between defence and offence seamlessly and giving strong words of encouragement when needed (GEM BACK IN THE RING!) Jess Ports was a welcome addition this week, providing strong feeds into the ring during the first half and then running circles around her defenders in the second half. Gemma Mulqueen and Bronwen Rees placed St Kilda’s shooters under enormous pressure. Bron worked unbelievably hard against her GS, shutting down her leads and intercepting numerous balls that awarded her a joint best on with Speedy Gonzales Greta Stevens who didn’t stop running the entire game. Although the Yarras went down by 5, the persistence and sheer determination that was displayed by the Yarras is something to be celebrated. Next week is ours girls! St Kilda 37 def South Yarra 33
A Grade took on the undefeated Cheltenham this week hoping to make amends for the previous week. Despite great defensive work from Lucy Ren who was named best on, Cheltenham’s accuracy in front of goals meant the Yarras were on the back foot the entire match. Down a lot of rotations, the girls fought hard but Cheltenham proved too good. Final score South Yarra 30 def by Cheltenham 57
A few weeks off from footy, an early start on Saturday and a last-minute attempt to acquire extra players was met with the Womens football team were running onto the field with only 8 players, 9 once Bianca rocked up at half time. Even still, with half the number of players as Frankston we managed to keep running circles around our opposition until the final siren went. The first quarter we were quite unlucky to go down by 4 goals, but it is excellent to see that our team still celebrate for a point, kicked by Jenny!! The second half of the match saw majority of the play in the forward half with even our defensive players pushing up to help in the forward line. Many attempts at goal unfortunately were not rewarded and we walked away with another 2 points. Alas, Frankston failed to score any further goals this quarter and the girls walked into half time feeling a bit more confident with their skills and ability. A slight change up of positions at half time put Esther as full forward, a much-needed break from the back line. The shift up, a few creative ways of scoring free kicks and some awesome marking led to our first goal, scored by one of our Frankston-loaned players, who surely received a copping walking back into her huddle. Is it wrong to recruit the opposition half way through a game? The final quarter began with another goal scored by Bianca putting us only 5 goals down. Frankston went on to score another 2 and the final score was 8.3-51 to Yarra’s 2.3-15. Again, everyone should be commended on the outstanding team work exhibited, which seems to be improving each and every game. If anyone has friends, girlfriends or sisters who wants to come down and have a kick, be sure to send them our way, that would be much appreciated!
The thirds headed out to Endeavour Hills for another early start, and struggled to adjust early to the cold, wet conditions of the morning. Despite enjoying the lion’s share of possession in the first quarter, inaccuracy meant they went in to the first change trailing. Goals again proved difficult to come by in the second quarter, although continued dominance of the play meant despite kicking 3.12 for the half, they went in 5-point leaders at the half. The second half provided more accuracy to accompany the continued dominance the team enjoyed through the middle, and a second half scoreline of 5.3 to 1.3 saw the Yarras run away with a comfortable 29-point win.
The Reserves played powerhouse of the competition, Endeavour Hills and lost by 11 goals. It was a fast paced game on a perfect deck. Hardie and Brady kicked two. Dixon, Wise and Dorca all contributed with a goal. Triantafilou was brilliant in his first game for the Yarras. Lay played his best game of the season.
On what was a beautiful day for football the seniors were jumped by a very impressive Endeavour Hills. Only managing 2 points in the first quarter the lead was over 6 goals. Daisy moved the magnets in the second half throwing Z Maher in the guts with immediate effect, Villella tried to get the boys up and about kicking a goal that would have finished in level 3 of the G. It was a better showing in the second half but the damage was done and the boys from EH were far to good on the day. Scott again led the team well with another week in the bests. Margin ended at 112 points.
This weekend its past player day at the Den as the Yarras take on Heatheron. Make sure you get down to watch the boys go about their business.
