Our netballers had a successful day winning 3 from 4 and our Thirds also won. However, injuries and a virus limited our Seniors and Reserves ability for a win.

Round three was off to a pretty even start in the first quarter of C Reserve Netball. Black Rock were strong all the way down the court and with height on their side, they quickly took the lead heading into the break. The second quarter rolled around and that’s when all our hearts broke seeing Candice Bodger go down with an ankle injury to challenge all ankle injuries in the history of ankle injuries. Shaken, and a key defender down, C Reserve were also down at halftime. Key word being down here. Black Rock’s defenders were blessed with the longest limbs known to man kind but Hannah Bevis and Jules Telfer battled hard against them and put on a clinic in the goal circle. Black Rock shooters also happened to be blessed with the longest limbs known to man kind but that didn’t stop Annie Lee, Candice Bodger and Alex Gandini giving it a red hot crack and turning over an exceptional amount of balls in defence. The girls fought hard for the remainder of the game with best on going to Ruby McHaffie, but Black Rock were too tough this time round and it saw the end result going against the Yarras this week. Thoughts are with Candice, we hope you make a speedy recovery!
C grade took on East Brighton this week and had a bit of a shaky start. The game continued neck and neck for the first 3 quarters with the Yarras heading into the final quarter 1 goal behind. In the fourth quarter the Yarras just clicked! The defence end was turning over ball every time it entered their third. They combined with the mid court to move the ball down the court faster than Jarrod falls in love with a blonde on a reality TV show. The goalers put on a clinic, with Emily Bacon footloose and fancy free in the circle and scoring from positions all over the ring. This earnt her best on ground. The Yarras put in huge team effort and were able to turn it into a solid win in the end. The final score was Yarras 40 to East Brighton 31. Up the Yarras!!
B Grade faced fierce competition in Round 3, coming up against Cheltenham. A shaky start saw the Yarras end the first quarter down by 10 goals. However, the determined team did not let that stop them, coming back in the second quarter with a fighting spirit that saw them lose the quarter by only 1. Greta Stevens played a tight defence on her goal attack. With arms like tentacles, Greta continuously plucked the ball out of the air effortlessly to secure numerous turnovers for the team. This earned her best on court for the day. Special mention to Sarah Dalbosco and Mad Lennox who played more than 4 quarters of netball and still absolutely killed it on the court. Next week we’ll get ‘em! Up the Yarras! Cheltenham 40 def South Yarra 13.
A Grade met the ladder leader Clayton. Lucy continued her strong rebounding, giving Clayton no second chances. Laura controlled the flow of play down the whole court which earned her best on accolades. Hayley was reliable in goals, allowing the Yarras to remain in the green on the scoreboard for majority of the game. South Yarra 30 defeated Clayton 27.
Our womens football will commence next week.
As usual the Thirds had a hectic 48 hours prior to Saturday mornings bounce due to needing some last minute recruits after only having 15 named on Thursday night. Dallas and co proved to be up to the task yet again with 19 making the earlier start of 8.45am. The match time speech was that of thanks to the last minute recruits but also one of focus and to remain playing the brand of footy that has served them so well the last 12 months. The match started with 17 on the field due to some final strapping requirements still being completed but the Yarras still started with two quick goals. The first quarter was one of dominance that even saw the big ruckman running out of the middle at a centre bounce to spot full forward for the day, Kai Lorrimar on the chest. He duly converted to show he’s an able replacement while the reliable Brock Monok remains under his injury cloud. The quarter ended 6 goals to 0. The second quarter saw a bit of a wobble from the Yarras after young Mark Tuangthong was flattened between two Keysborough players meaning the game was suspended for a short while. This seemed to dwindle the attack on the ball slightly from all Yarras players and it showed on the score board being outscored 2 goals to 1. After several vocal comments from a number of players and coach the second half was played in a similar vein to the first quarter and the Yarra’s camped in the Keysborough half for the remainder of the game. The forwards have a lot to thank the half back line of Daniel Borg, Liam Halverson and Zach Hardie for. They continuously repelled the opposition attack and giving them plenty of service. With new recruit Jack Zeler going down to a suspected hamstring, the Yarras finished with 17 on the field but a 5 goal final term ensured they finished 15.11 102 to 2.6 18. The Thirds now sit top of the ladder and look forward to facing Dingley next week, whom they are ahead of only on percentage.
The Reserves started with a depleted lineup including 3 players that had just played in the Thirds and had one short on the bench. The new players provided a refreshing look, as Grisold took many marks and rebounded the ball out of defence for the Yarras. Johnson was superb around the ground racking up disposals at will and providing manic pressure onto his opponents. Klomp held his man well and limited his disposals and goals. Scarlo was measured in his kicking and always found open space. The Redbacks were far too skilful and fit for the Yarras. Although the Yarras pressure and unwillingness to give up proved to be unwanted by the Redbacks and it showed in their undisciplined acts. The Reserves lost by 72 points.
Our Senior side made a strong start against an unsuspecting Hampton Park team, "it won't be a walk in the park!" was yelled by their Full Forward as he asked his teammates to step up. And that they did. The first ten minutes were goalless both ways, over the next 70-odd minutes the Redbacks piled them on; 25 for the game to our 1. It was an ugly day for us, the Redbacks were superb.
