The injured footballers battled their way through round 13 whilst the netballers, once again, saw some on court success.
C-Reserve took on third placed Lyndhurst in a really tough, testing and physical battle. Starting strong, the Yarra’s took the lead in the first as they capitalised on turnovers, maintained patient in the goal circle and applied pressure down the court. Losing momentum in the second and third quarter saw the Yarra’s down by 6 at the end of the third. Determined to take the win, attention was drawn back to applying pressure, maintaining possession, being patient and playing our game. Keeping a cool head, the Yarra’s were clawed back and were down by 3 leading into the fourth. Knowing we could win – the girls came out firing in the first minutes on the fourth. This week’s best on, Kerry Spencer was an absolute star in her ability to move from a weapon in the mid-court to an amazing defensive game. Kez had countless turnovers and frustrated Lyndhursts’ incredibly accurate shooters which allowed the Yarra’s to take the win by 1! South Yarra 39 to Lyndhurst 38.
C grade took on the top of the table Mordialloc Red. We knew that it was going to be a difficult task from the start with Mordialloc reaching almost 100 goals in previous matches. The Yarras decided to focus on our game and try and build on our score each quarter. The defence end turned over plenty of ball and were fantastic bringing the ball down the court. The attack end had a shaky start but the introduction of Molly O’Bryan helped to settle the ship and the combinations between Jess Zach and Emily Bacon built as the game progressed. Best on ground this week went to Lilly Rae, she worked hard in defence for the entire 4 quarters and just her sheer presents struck fear in the Mordialloc midcourt feeders. Although the final score was 50 to Mordialloc and 27 to the Yarras, we were able to draw the 3rd quarter in the game. The C grade girls should be commended for keeping their heads up for the entire game and fighting to the very end, a very proud captain here
B grade took the court this week anticipating a difficult match against top 2 team; Heatherton Black. After a shaky start, the Yarras were able to solidify a significant lead by half time. Jess Porter was a key player in the Yarras success, earning her best on court for her amazing work in the ring. SY 36 defeated HB 35.
An unassuming A Grade came up against Keysborough this week. The girls were on from the very start of the match and were able to build on their lead through each quarter. Hayley Becker’s outstanding holding and accuracy in the goal ring ensured the Yarras were able to capitalise on turnovers. Despite Gemma trying to sabotage the match by scoring a goal for the opposition whilst playing in GK, the Yarras came away with their fourth straight win. South Yarra 40 def Keysborough 34
After a few wet days the sun broke out to greet the Yarras onto their home ground to play against Hallam on Sunday. With a rare sight of a bench the 18 girls got together for their team huddle, ready to take on the game. The Yarras showed their confidence and aggression towards the ball, leaving Hallam pointless until the final quarter, only allowing them to succeed one goal. The girls utilised their training of blind turns and other evasive actions out of traffic to take on anyone in their way throughout the game. With the wind strongly not in anyone’s favour this week, Yarras were able to spin this to their advantage with Beni kicking 4 through the goal posts. Ammo, Victoria and Lucy also lead the Yarras to victory with one goal each, defeating Hallam. South Yarra 7.15 (57) defeated Hallam 1.0 (6).
A couple of Thirds regulars joined a team largely made up of Joycie’s mates to take on league leaders Cheltenham on Saturday morning. Cheltenham were able to seize the early momentum, before an even second quarter kept the Yarras in the game at half time. The third quarter saw disaster strike when the team’s spiritual leader Puddles was forced to leave the field early, his face covered in blood from a laceration to the forehead. Some would call the actions that led to his injury brave, more would probably label them stupid, and others among us didn’t actually see it. In any case, the objective result was a trip to the ED and ten stitches for his troubles. Maybe it was the disappointment of losing Puddles, or perhaps it was the shock of discovering there was actually blood supplying his head. Whatever it was, the Yarras were slow to restart and allowed Cheltenham to put on six goals to one in the third term to extend their lead. The disappointment this caused was compounded when disaster struck just prior to ¾ time, as designated ruckman Lucas, whose efforts against a much larger opponent all day had been outstanding, was lost for the game with a lower leg injury. Finding himself in the bizarre position of being one of the tallest in the team, Alex bravely stood up to take over ruck duties, however despite a heroic performance was unable to drag the side over the line, as they ended up going down by 15 goals, in a performance that provided much encouragement, despite the scoreline.
After the visitors started with a nine goal lead in the first fifteen minutes of the match, it looked like it was going to be a very long day for the makeshift Reserves Yarras side. Lay and Barr were the only goal scorers for the Yarras. Five players played two matches for the day and the Yarras did not have a bench in the final half. The Yarras reduced the flow of goals and restricted Endeavour Hills to 19-19-133 for the day.
The Seniors took on Endeavour Hills and with the injuries mounting were always going to be up against it. The first quarter was promising with a 50 metre penalty giving the visitors a small lead at the break, we went away from Daisy’s game plan in the second and the game started to get away from us. A. Pane did a nasty job on his finger and spent the night in hospital. In the end it wasn’t a great day, the Falcons kept pushing until the end where the undermanned Yarras were wishing for the siren.
