Round 10
First XI
First XI played the Knights as we attempted to cement our top two credentials in what an eventful day. We had drama early as Wes pulled out due to an ongoing hand injury, at less than a moment’s notice we were able to bring Quinny up from the twos for his debut in the First XI.
We bowled first with Bourkey and Dion opening the bowling, bowling reasonably well without getting an early breakthrough. 10 overs in Binky came on to bowl and only managed to last 3 deliveries as he limping away from the crease with injury. Debutant Quinny was given the responsibility of finishing off the first over and do so successfully.
Jamma then came on to bowl from the top end after Bink’s injury, and unfortunately suffered a similar fate going down with a lower back injury after only being able to bowl two legal deliveries. Yet again, Quinny was given the responsibility of finishing off the injured players over and this time it brought success as Ash pulled off a stumping from a travelling leg side delivery.
The second wicket proved difficult to get as the Knights put on 95 for the second wicket with both batsmen reaching half centuries. Nobby eventually got the breakthrough with the Knights travelling nicely at 2/136. With the wicket came a fightback as we took a quick hall of 5/21 dismantling the opposition largely due to Nobby as he picked up his first career 5 wicket haul.
When the 8th wicket fell the remaining wickets fell shortly after as the Knights were bowled out for 215 after 42.3 overs. It was a great effort to reduce them to that amount for the high majority of the innings having numerous people being barely able to move.
Nobby 5/37
Bourkey 2/24
Rowdy 2/55
Quinny 1/20
Jamma courageously went out to open the batting with Hoggett and got us off to a positive start with runs coming quickly. It was not until a disastrous runout ended the partnership. Hoggett steadied the ship batting through the innings with the incoming batsmen batting around him.
Bourkey, Nobby, Ash and Rowdy all managed to put partnerships on with Hoggett as we successfully navigated the Knights bowling attack. In what was an approved performance with the bat, as we did not lose clumps of wickets at a time, valuing our wicket and not letting the Knights in with a sniff.
At the 40th over the equation was three Runs to win and six runs for a second 50 over century for Hoggett. Facing up Hoggett faced and smacked the delivery through square leg for four finishing on an impressive 98* as we ran home comfortable winners.
Second XI
The second XI played St Anne’s up at Cadbury’s on a very small Cadbury’s oval. Winning the toss and batting we got off to a slow start losing our first two wickets early inside 30 runs. This brought Brady J and Chris to the crease as they started pulling moving the game in our favour. Chris departed for 18 bringing Matty Lansdell to the crease and in playing his first game for the year did not miss a beat, smacking balls all over the ground in what was smashing innings. Smashing numerous 4’s and 6’s all over the ground.
Matty was dismissed on 63 bringing Tadhg and Kirky together as they continued to push the score up towards the desirable 200 number. Unfortunately, we fell just short of the 200 finishing our innings on 9/187
Matty 63
Brady J 38
Tadhg 21*
Chris 18
Brady F’s first over was a bit of a stinker landing balls here there and everywhere but into his second over he began hitting the correct line and length and began becoming a serious issue for the St Anne’s batsmen.
Brady picked up the first three wickets in his dominant spell of bowling which included 4 maidens and which was an incredible achievement playing on the lightning quick Cadbury’s oval. His opening bowling partner Tadhg and first change bowler also put the clamps on the St Anne’s. After 17 overs, we were in a good position with the score at 4/72.
At 5 and 6 regular second grade players made their way to the crease and they showed there experience as they put on a game changing 41 run partnership to swinging the game into St Anne’s favour.
Chris got the important breakthrough and shortly afterwards came about his second wicket and Gypsy’s first. St Anne’s in a very difficult position of 7/113 and us right back on top.
The eighth wicket proved as difficult as the fifth as they managed to put on another 50-run stand, the partnership gave us chances that we just could not capitalise on with. Alec picked up his first wicket for the club at a crucial time making the score 8/167, The equation 2 wickets required for us, 21 runs required for St Anne’s with plenty of overs left in the day.
St Anne’s managed to get the 21 runs without losing another wicket winning the game by 2 wickets in what was another game for us to lose ever so slightly.
Brady F 3/26
Chris 2/60
Gypsy 1/16
Kirky 1/28
Alec 1/29
