Round 8,
First XI vs Brighton
We played our first game after Christmas in honour of Shelbi Berechree who tragically passed away during the Christmas break. We were still on a high from winning then T20 competition just days before Christmas as we attempting to keep our good form going.
Binky won the toss and we had a bat, with Jammy and Hoggett opening up. Unusually we lost and early wicket with Jammy knicking off for just five and us at 1/19. Hoggett and Bourkey then managed to put the game back onto our terms as they put on 177 for the second wicket with Hoggett having the bigger influence on the partnership. Hoggett reached his half century relatively quickly as he hit boundary after boundary.
Approximately halfway through the innings Hoggett brought up his first century in the 50 over season, this was shortly followed by Bourkey’s half century. Bourkey departed shortly before drinks for 55 and Ash came and went.
Dion and Hoggett then put on a 64-run partnership which also pushed us over the 250 mark before Hoggett’s sensational innings ended on 149 just after drinks, the innings consisted of 16 boundaries and 3 maximums. Thanks to his batting, the remaining batsmen were able to play aggressively. Brady and Dion managed to capitalise putting on a quick fire 50-run stand which put us through the 300 barrier.
Caleb and Dion lost their wickets in the final over as we finished on 7/323.
Hoggett 149
Bourkey 55
Dion 47
Wes and Bourkey were given the new ball and Bourkey got us off to the perfect start with a wicket first ball and then continued the momentum taking another 3 top order wickets. The score early on being 4/65
The 5th wicket proved difficult to get with one batsmen playing conventional cricket strokes with the other batsmen just smoking the ball down the ground to the boundary.
After Wes’s spell, Binky introduced spin electing to bowl Sid. The move proved an inspired one as Sid put on a clinical performance with ball taking wickets for fun as he tore apart the middle to lower order.
The 21st over saw Binky put his influence on the game as he got a hand to a straight drive resulting in the run out of the non-striker. After that, the rest was all Sid as he took career best figures including his first 5-wicket hall.
Sid 5/43
Bourkey 4/51
Binky – 1 Runout
SECOND XI vs Bothwell
The Second XI jumped on the bus and took the long road trip up to Bothwell; after we eventually got there, we lost the toss and had a bowl.
Bothwell got off to a terrific start, Thanks to a terrific Toastie run out we managed the eventually get the required breakthrough. We continued toiling away without much luck with numerous balls edged into gaps or just over and just short of fieldsmen.
This was an unfortunate theme for the duration of the innings as Bothwell went on to make a big score. When Kirky, Jacko or Rowdy did get eventual breakthroughs, we were unable to keep the pressure on the incoming batsmen with all of the Bothwell batsmen making a start.
Some poor bowling led to plenty of extras, which assisted Bothwell in making their final score pass 250. After the 40 overs, Bothwell had amassed 4/266 thanks to an unbeaten century from their opening batsmen.
Rowdy 1/26
Jacko 1/37
Kirky 1/41
Tadhg 1 Run Out
Huigi got out cheaply but a Gibbo and Rowdy partnership steadied the ship slightly. Gibbo looked good for his 22, which included a 6 (not bad for a bloke who couldn’t hit out of the square in round 1) as did Rowdy for his 38 who smacked 6 to the boundary.
When Rowdy was dismissed we had an almighty collapse, we lost a staggering 5/6. Rowdy’s dismissal left us at 3/79 and when Jacko was run out for 3 we were 4/85. The next three wickets fell with no runs added to the total.
Kirk and Tadhg came together to try add some runs to the total but in the end having a similar fate to the previous batsmen. Kirky dismissed for 4 with the score on 93 and the final two wickets falling for another 10 runs as were all bowled out for a miserable 103. A smashing Brady Frame pull shot the highlight as the innings ended.
Rowdy 38
Gibbo 22.
