ROUND 6
First XI
The First XI played host to St Anne’s in a second vs third match to really set up the season. The winner having second spot on the ladder with just one game prior to the Christmas break.
We had a few blokes under the weather so we were desperate for Binky to win the toss and for us to have a bat. This wasn’t the case as St Anne’s won the toss and elected to bat. Bourkey won the toss and managed to get a wicket with the second ball of the match getting us off to a great start.
Wes was given the new ball at the other end and was equally as effective striking early to have St Anne’s in early trouble. The opening bowling partnership lasted twelve overs and the success continued for both Wes and Bourkey. The partnership picked up 6 wickets and gave up very few runs.
Jamma came into the attack and picked up another wicket as he and Binky continued piling the pressure onto the St Anne’s batsmen. The lower order wickets were proving difficult as the lower down the order the St Annes batsmen were the better off their defence was.
Binky finally managed to get one through the gate and once that wicket fell the last ones were knocked over relatively quickly.
A fantastic bowling effort – as we bowled St Anne’s out for just 102
Bourkey 4/27
Binky 3/6 (off 6.3)
Wes 2/29
Jamma 1/13
Hoggett and Jamma opened the batting and yet again got us off to a fantastic start with the bat and this time they did it with and extra aggressive mindset. They put on 85 in what seemed to be no time with us in such a good position very early.
They fell together leaving Ash and Bourkey to hit the remaining runs which they did giving the Saints a massive double bonus point win chasing down the runs in under 14 overs.
Hoggget 54
Jamma 30
Second XI
The Second XI travelled to Geilston Bay to take on Montagu Bay as they tried to get there second win for the season.
We bowled first and wickets proved difficult to come by as the Montagu Bay batsmen managed to put together multiple partnerships. Kirky managed to get the first wicket after a 94-run opening stand. Another 50 run stand put them into a solid position to attack the rest of the innings. bef
Brycey and Chris managed to get breakthroughs in the middle of the innings taking wickets two and three in quick succession.
Some poor bowling hurt us as they managed to extend a very good start with the bat posting an imposing 240 off their 40 overs. Brady F managing to take a couple of wickets in the back few overs.
Chasing a such a massive score saw Huigi change things up with Gibbo told to open the batting much to the surprise of most onlookers. The change seemed to work wonders as Quinny who partnered Gibbo got us off to a good start putting on 70.
Unfortunately, they were able to do what we couldn’t in taking multiple wickets at a time. Quinny’s dismissal was quickly followed by the dismissals of Brycey and Huigi.
Kirky hung around for a whilst with Gibbo before he to fell as did Neasey very shortly afterwards.
Chris on debut came in at 5/125 to help Gibbo who was batting magnificently as they put on the partnership that we desperately needed to put the game towards our favour. Gibbo also brought up his maiden half century for St Virgil’s in an amazing display of batting.
We had plenty of overs left to bat Chris and Gibbo’s partnership got the equation down to less than a run a ball. Chris got out puting Jacko to the crease as he continued to move the momentum more and more into our favour. However, it was when Jacko departed did the momentum swing back into Montagu Bays favour.
We were 7/198 needing 43 runs with 8 overs remaining.
The last few wickets fell quickly as we were bowled out for 205, a game that we felt let slip.
Gibbo 74* - Fantastic effort managing to carry his bat
Chris 37
Quinny 18
