In a weekend where the weather looked to play havoc on us, we still managed to get two full matches in with varied results
First XI
The First XI made the trip up to Tynwald Park to take on New Norfolk with a very different looking side Unfortunately we played one short to make the game even more difficult for us.
Bink won the toss and we had a bat with Jammy and Hoggett opening up, we lost early wickets with both openers failing to reach double figures, and when Brady fell shortly after a recovery mission was required.
Reidy and Bourkey were at the crease at 3/38 and managed to put on 55 as we managed to get towards a competitive score. The New Norfolk bowlers bowled well making it difficult to score quick runs so the overs were catching up to us quickly. First gamer Anthony fell for six just after drinks with Wes falling shortly after leaving us at 6/115 with around 12 overs to go.
Binky joined Bourkey at the crease and they put on 41 to get us over the competitive 150 mark. Due to long wet grass and a heavy ball, boundaries were hard to come by which resulted in lots of running between the wickets and some very tired shots. The 47th over proved to be a big one, Binky swung for the hills and missed resulting in his wicket early in the over and on the last ball Bourkey got run out due to some excellent fielding.
Gibbo and Sid faced the rest of the overs combining for eight to lift the total to 168
Bourkey 72
Bink 22
Reidy 13
Without a recognised wicket keeper, Brady took the gloves for the first session with Hogget taking them for the final two sessions. Early wickets was the key and Bourkey managed to get both openers for not many thanks to an excellent catch by Wes, the tight bowling of both openers frustrating the New Norfolk batsmen.
The 15th over saw Jammy brought on for his first over and caused mayhem with it, his first over included two wickets – The two wickets being arguably there best two batsmen and putting the game into our favour.
After drinks and combining with Jammy, Bink did what he does best and caused havoc in the middle order claiming the next three scalps and making it difficult to score. The second session resulted in Binky’s three wickets and minimal runs. The scenario at the second drinks break was 48 runs required three wickets in hand.
The final session started in the same way as the first session with Bourkey claiming two early ones in consecutive balls and after blocking out a couple of overs worth the return of Jammy brought about the final wicket and the end of the match.
Bourkey 4/36
Jammy 3/21
Bink 3/26
Wes 0/15 of 7
Second XI
The second XI played host to Mackillop as they attempted to keep the momentum going after their first win last week. With numerous fill-ins helping us out this week, it was always going to be a difficult task but to the lads credit they fought hard all day.
Bowling first the inform opening bowling partnership of Toastie and Brady F started us off well taking early wickets in regular intervals, Brady being the main beneficiary taking another three wickets, which included going straight through both openers.
After bowling well without any reward in last couple of weeks Toastie managed to catch a break and get himself a wicket.
Every bowler that came on inflicted some more damage to the Mackillop batsmen as we took wicket after wicket. Unfortunately amongst the wickets were a few extras, which resulted in crucial runs.
Jackson, Kirk and first gamer Dave all contributed with two wickets each.
Mackillop were bowled out in 28.5 over for 119,
Brady 3/23
Dave 2/10
Kirk 2/17
Jackson 2/27
Toastie 1/36
Batting unfortunately was not our strong suit with only two batsmen reaching double figures. We had regular wickets falling at regular and crucial times; it was not until Toastie came out to bat with Dave when we started to put on a partnership.
Dave and Toastie came together at a troubling 6/21 and they put on a gutsy 44 spoiling Mackillop’s hope of bonus points. Dave and Toastie batted time and gave both of them valuable time at the crease. A few wickets fell towards the end but in a real positive, we managed to bat out the 40 overs finishing the innings 9/78. A disciplined Mackillop bowling attack didn’t give up to many extras being one of the major differences between the two teams.
Dave 34*
Toastie 11
Huigi 6
Next Week First XI play top of the table Lindisfarne and Second XI have the bye.
