Round 3
First XI
Travelling up to Collinsvale to take on the Knights - ready to keep going forward with the momentum that we had built throughout the T20’s and the start of the 50 over season.
Bowling First Binky and Bourkey got us under way with a handy start taking an early wicket – that of the Knights captain. The second wicket was difficult to get as their best two batsmen were at the crease and bowling well. The bowling was tight which restricted the runs on such a small ground.
Shortly after the first drinks break the Knights best batsmen went down with a hamstring injury and unfortunately could not continue on – We hope Boucher has a speedy recovery. The Boucher injury changed a little bit of the momentum, as we were able to get right on top applying maximum pressure to the incoming Knights batsmen. Shrimp snagged his first wicket taking the Knights to 2/120.
First Xi debutant Jammy came into the attack and excluding his first 2 deliveries which were both hit for 6 (welcome to First XI Cricket Jammy) bowled beautifully, combining very nicely with Shrimp. The bowling partnership resulted in another 3 wickets including Jammy’s first.
We were unable to take late wickets but still managed to keep the bowling reasonably tight, the number 8 batsmen for the Knights was the only one that managed to hit away towards the end to get The Knights over the 200 mark, which is always an imposing score. The innings finished at 5/211.
Brady 3/29
Jammy 1/39
Bourkey 1/45
Jammy was also given the task of opening and started in positive fashion, smacking the first ball to the boundary, and despite and early wicket at the other end kept his composure and made batting look easy. He combined with Coach Kenny as they put on 93 for the second wicket.
Kenny twinged his hamstring a little bit and after that started swinging for the hills joining Jammy in smacking boundaries all over the park. Much to the disappointment of the crowd Kenny on drinks fell just short of his maiden half century for the saints being bowled on 44, his 44 included 9 boundaries.
After a glorious 66 Jammy finally mishit one and was caught but leaving us in a strong position at 3/138 needing 74 runs off about 30 overs. Ash then began to take over as he partnered with Brady, Dion and Kirk to try and end the game.
Kirk was the 6th wicket to fall and he fell with us on 200, Brad came on to bat next – leaving immediately after. The tail exposed only needing 12 runs to win. Thankfully, a cool head from Ash and a free hit to Finchy gave us the win in what was a very pleasing performance and gaining a bonus point, Finishing 7/213 after just 34 overs.
Jammy 66 – Including 11 4’s and 1 -6
Ash 45* - including 7 -4’s and 1 -6
Kenny 44 including 9 -4’s
Second XI
The Second XI played host to Old beach in an unusual encounter that, can only be described as The Brady Frame Show.
Old Beach batted first and had just 9 players, the Saints not doing much better playing one short as well. Toastie and Brady Frame opened the bowling and put the old beach batsmen taking very regular wickets.
All the Old Beach players played the same aggressive way, which fell into Brady’s hands giving all batsmen problems with the length he continued to bowl. Brady managed to take wickets for fun taking 7/23 in his allotted overs, A high majority of the wickets falling caught behind.
At the other end, Toastie was having one of those days –causing as many problems for the batsmen but unfortunately none falling to hand.
Sid came on and in a small cameo took the 8th and final wicket as we rolled Old beach for 70.
Credit to all the bowlers as they only bowled six extras – not giving anything away. Terrific performance.
Brady 7/23
Sid 1/14
Toastie 0/33
After a dominant performance with the ball we went with the theory – keep them going whilst they are hot and gave Brady the opportunity to open the batting. This unfortunately did not go as planned as he was dismissed for a duck. He opened with fellow lower end batsmen Gibbo who just refuses to get out.
After Brady fell Rowdy came in – and the quickly left leaving us a little vulnerable. However, a dominant partnership with Brycey and Gibbo put the game to bed. Brycey smacked 37 before just before we hit the runs, leaving that responsibility to Oyster who did it happily.
Gibbo carrying his bat for 9 – showing the Old Beach boys what a forward defence was.
3/71
Brycey 37 including 7 fours
Gibbo 9*
Oyster 9*
