Round 1.
First XI
The first eleven travelled to Pontville to start the season and Binky won the toss and elected to bat,
Bourkey and Dion started the season very slowly, climbing to 0/74, 24 Overs in. The 24 overs consisted of lots of swinging and missing and the occasional shot to the leg side.
The spinners came on, and that started our undoing, we then lost our first wicket, followed by another five in quick succession as the right arm spinner slowly flighted his way to a 5-wicket haul. We were quickly in a hole at 6/107.
The Seventh wicket partnership gave us some hope of a competitive score as debutant Hoggett and 2nd gamer Wes began to take control of the innings. Hoggett his runs to all areas of the ground as he dazzled his way to a maiden half century whilst Wes kept the scoreboard ticking over. The final few overs was batting display from Hoggett as he continually smacked the Brighton bowling attack. With one over to go a century was in sight. Needing three off the last ball for the ton, he unfortunately could only manage a single as he finished the innings on 98*. For the last partnership, Wes and Hoggett put on 117 and gave us a competitive 224 to defend.
Hoggett 98*
Dion 40
Bourkey 29
Wes 21*
Brighton started there innings with a clear intent to be aggressive, this provided chances but unfortunately we let some of those chances slip. Wickets came early, but so did runs. Binky taking the first four wickets of the innings. Dion came into the attack and managed to dismantle the next three.
After Binky had bowled himself out, we were in a strong position having Brighton 7 down for 114. Unfortunately Brighton’s danger man was still in as he blasted a half century. Binky’s replacement was Kirky and once hit got himself into a rhythm, he started causing problems, which eventually brought to the demise of Brighton’s top scorer. Dion and Sid knocked over the last two as we bowled Brighton out for 134. 90 Run winners
Dion 4/25
Binky 4/52
Sid 1/1
Kirk 1/14
Second XI
The second XI played off against Wellington at Austin’s Ferry as they attempted to continue their good form from the T20’s.
Bowling first, the first wicket proved difficult to come by as the Wellington openers put on a 111-run stand. Once the first wicket fell, we were able to regular wickets, but the opening stand made it difficult to prevent them from posting a large total. James took the first wicket and Rowdy very quickly took the next two and had them 3/124 and when Jackson took his first wicket for the club Wellington were 4/150 and we were hopeful of looking at their tail.
Unfortunately, we could not remove the other opener who helped navigate the new batsmen into small partnerships. Huigi threw the ball to the spinners as Gibbo and Brycey tried to limit the damage in the last few overs. Which worked well as Gibbo and Brycey both picked up two wickets apiece.
After 40 overs, Wellington finished 8/225 there opener still not out posting a century.
Brycey 2/15
Gibbo 2/24
Rowdy 2/36
Jackson 1/34
James 1/39
With the batting Wellington did what we couldn’t, take early wickets as we lost wickets very quickly, James Sam and Rowdy in the sheds shortly.
Tadhg stuck around for a whilst with Kenny but they were unable to keep the runs flowing as plenty of dot balls built up so did the pressure, this causing more wickets to fall. Brycey and Jackson put on the biggest partnership of the innings. After Jackson fell, the remaining wickets shortly followed
Gibbo left stranded on five gutted as he thought he had a St Virgil’s half century in his sight
Bowled out for 84
Brycey 24
Kenny 14
Jackson 6
Next Week both games are at St Virgil’s. First XI play Saturday against Bushy Park as we attempt to go 2 -0, whilst the Second XI will look to get back on the winners list as they play Sorell on Sunday.
