The 18s had their first hit out together under Peter Clarke who is doing an amazing job with these young boys. Unfortunately they went down in a tough encounter against quality opposition. The boys looked really good in patches though and for a while in the 3rd qtr. looked like putting Castlemaine under a lot of pressure. It is really worth coming down to see these kids as they have plenty going for them this season. Brad Wilson badly dislocated a finger in the opening minutes but will more than likely return for the first home and away game.
In the reserves we again went in undermanned due to work commitments, cricket and the dreaded "Sunday flu". With a midfield including Sims and Heritage the team was still always going to be competitive. The end result was pretty close (the scoreboard was hardly updated), but I think we suffered a narrow loss in the end. It was good to see some of the boys finally having a run together after a long pre season. On another positive note Shane Marchewka filled in for Dave Tyquin to coach his first game.
In the main game we jumped out of the blocks with several regulars missing again. We held a 40 point lead at half time and were looking quite comfortable. The third qtr. while only a practice match was pretty poor. We put a few key players on ice at half time and the team seemed to take its foot off the pedal. By 3 quarter time the scores were level and we found ourselves kicking into a strong breeze to try and win the game. After conceding the first 2 goals of the qtr. the boys rallied and showed the character of the group, to kick the 4 of the last 5 goals and win the game. Tom Gleeson marked everything at CHB and Luke Smailes kicked 5 in his first game for the clubs. Mick Kilty kicked 3 in his second game back at the club. Other major contributors on the day included Patrick Jackson, Steven Fogerty and Joey Piccolo among others.
New Player Welcome The club is pleased to announce we have signed Luke Smailes for season 2014. Luke has won numerous league goal kicking awards at Scarborough in Perth and won a league best and fairest medal at Lancelin. He has also represented the WAAFL at state level. Please make him feel welcome when you see him around the club.
