UNDER 17s
The 17's enjoyed the week off and play in the RDFNL Div 1 Grandfinal against Gisborne Rookies this Sunday at 3pm at Romsey Park.
Eight teams members have also played in our 19/u team this year, four of them as permanent players! Our 17/u team is; Emma Cogger (Capt), Amy Duff (Vice Captain) Gemma Baird, Sarah Duff, Alice MacDonald-Myers, Madison Kleiner, Alison Cumming, Mikayla Tunley and Kate Bartlett. We encourage everyone to get over to Romsey and support our young guns as they aim to take home the Premiership Flag. Go Hawks!!
UNDER 19s
The 19’s team took on Diggers and continued their dominance from the previous week, winning 68-9. Shae and Sarah were out this week, so Alice MacDonald-Myers played up from the 17’s team once again.
The girls started strongly being up 16-3 at the first break. Emma Cogger and Gemma Baird were on fire in the ring and Gracie, Amy and Macca were creating plenty of turnovers through the mid court and fed the ball beautifully to them.
The next three quarters gave us the opportunity to dictate the play, with our centre court girls focused on creating turnovers directly off the Diggers centre pass, with all players holding a front position at the whistle and either taking the intercept from a forced pass or benefiting from a held ball. Our defensive end was reliable in the ring, either intercepting the ball prior to the ball entering the ring or forcing the missed goal and mopping up the rebound.
Gracie Reid was terrific in the WA and Centre positions, finding space, driving strong on decisive leads and feeding beautifully into the shooters. Amy Duff also had another strong game, linking the court in the centre position and then playing goal attack in the last half, shooting at 88% accuracy and feeding well to Gemma. Our Captain Abbey Glassey was strong in defense, teaming up with Jess to shut down the Diggers shooters.
Well done on another strong win girls, we now look forward to a good hit out this week as we take on third placed Wallan before going into finals. Go Hawks!!
C GRADE
The C grade girls put up a fantastic fight against 2nd placed Diggers Rest, reducing their first round margin only going down in the end by 9 goals 23-32.
The game was close right from the very first whistle with the teams going goal for goal, however, a couple of handling errors resulted in Diggers getting the advantage on the scoreboard by the first break. We found ourselves down by three goals and our aim was to stay competitive and try to peg back the deficit.
The next two quarters saw improvements in ball handling and player positioning in the ring. Coming on to the court at quarter time, Monique Dean and Paige Mitchener were having an immediate impact and Alex MacDonald was strong under the ring with the help of Louise Marendaz and improved feeds from our midcourt. The third quarter proved to be our best of the day, only going down by one goal in the term.
Although the team continued to work extremely hard and brought us within three goals of Digggers many times throughout the game, we just couldn’t force enough turnover ball to pull back the deficit.
Monique Dean had an outstanding game, coming up with plenty of tips and intercepts and then driving the ball successfully out of the defensive end. Paige Mitchener had a fantastic game, with accurate passing and feeds into the ring and Chloe Finch was again strong in the midcourt leading the way with her encouraging voice and great movement and pressure.
This is a team that has made such big improvements throughout the year and the improved result against such a strong premiership contender is a testament to just how far they have come.
Well done girls on a terrific game, we know that this weeks Wallan game will be another hard fought one to finish the home and away season. Train and play hard. Go Hawks!
