Our line-up for the opening quarter against Riddell had strength in the back-court, speed in the mid-court, and shooters with height and agility. All seven players tried really hard. However, it was Riddell's speed that took us by surprise. Emily and Bonnie played the first two quarters of this round eight game, working on creating space for each other, while trying to get closer to the post to score goals.
Chelsea, Taylor and Tegan also worked hard to see the space to deliver the pass through the centre court, however with the umpire calling a quick three seconds, held balls were given and we lost possession of the ball.
Shae and Georgia tried out playing the Riddell shooters, however with a high percentage of accuracy, scored scored goals every time they had the ball in their shooting circle. The successful passages of play we had, wasn’t enough to slow them down.
In defence Riddells vision, speed chasing balls, and creating pressure was intense from the first whistle.
In the second half, Emily was rested and Rylee came into GA.
With fresh legs Rylee increased speed in the attacking end and also in the shooting circle. Tegan went into the centre and Taylor Bowen stepped back into GD to support Shae who had moved back into GK. Courtney also came into the game as WD.
These changes were made to increase the movement of the ball when Woodend had possession and increase our strength in defence. There was improvement, however Riddell's well-positioned players maintained the speed of moving the ball in an attacking manner to score goals and were aggressive in intercepting our passes.
Riddell were the better team on the day with the least amount of errors across the four quarters in a winning effort.
Improving and winning is not easy. It takes many hours of individual and team commitment to understand what style of game you need to play and can play as a team. It’s too easy to give up. We just need to go back to the basics and build from there. Next round is a new game against a new team and another chance to improve and get a win on the board. A win will come, its only a matter of time. Go Hawks.
