Woodend/Hesket had an excellent 35-18 win over Riddell in a really strong team performance. With three players unavailable, including our main goal shooting options, Gemma Baird stepped up from the 19/u team to make a wonderful contribution to the team.
The girls were determined this week to improve their consistency over four quarters with a goal to play a strong second quarter. Our second quarter's had really let us down this season after playing well for the first quarter. We have started strongly against the higher placed teams before falling away in the second quarter.
The girls broke their second quarter voodoo on the back of pressure being applied by all players when their opponent had the ball and patience in bringing the ball down the court from turnovers and scoring a goal. The second and last quarter of the match had the team score 10 goals in each quarter and finish the game off in commanding fashion.
A key to our success was excellent feeding from the mid-court players into Gemma and all over defensive pressure. Gemma was outstanding in GS. She continued her excellent form in goals and was super consistent, leading out when needed and holding position when required. Thanks Gemma for your fabulous contribution to our team.
Courtney Arthurson seems to have found her rhythm in WA, leading well in the mid-court and placing the ball perfectly in the goals. She has had a fabulous last few games. Jazz Gardner played her best game for the season, working hard to great space for Gemma as well as putting her shots up. Jazz shot 9 out of the 10 goals in the last quarter – well done Jazz!
The team has a great test coming up against Broadford who sit just below us on the ladder. If we continue to play as we did on Saturday, work hard at training and commit to each other then there is no reason why we can’t get three wins in a row. Go Hawks!
