The field yearning for the brown jacket was greeted with a magnificent day at the “soon to be no more” Eastern Golf Club in Doncaster, the club will shortly relocate to new facilities in the Yarra Valley. Whilst numbers were slightly down on last year it was very encouraging to have a number of parents of current students participating including eight dads of Year 7 boys. We were also privileged to be joined by VAFA CEO Michael Sholly.
The course presented in great condition with the greens presenting significant challenges. Scoring was tough but the competition tight. The 13th was keenly contested with $10,000 on offer for a hole-in-one and treasurer Frank Nolan offering generous odds to players who could get within 3 metres of the hole. Alas only Senior Coach Dick Baker and a previous coach Greg Feutrill were able to beat the treasurer on the day.
As the groups made their way in for well deserved refreshments and a sumptuous BBQ, discussion centred around which group would don the jackets. The winners finished with a score of 58 after shooting 71, they were the team of Greg Feutrill, Johno Kelvie, Gordon Windley and Fab Cattapan. In second place was a team of Year 7 Friar parents in Simon Garlick, Anthony Morrison, Ian Anderson and Steve Brown with 60.5 (Gross 71) and the last place on the podium was filled by last years champs Michael Mirabella, Jayden Hoegel, Rob Petracca and Serg with 61(Gross 73).
Special mentions to the groups led by Simon Woodman and Rober van Raay who both shot scores of 67 but were handicapped by their handicap!
Bringing up the tail of the field with an inglorious number was the organisers team lead by Sal Ciardulli.
The Longest Drive was shared by Jayden Hoegel and Luke Sandy, Straightest Drive went to Adrian van Raay and Closest to the Pin to Peter Hannan.
In the end a terrific day was had by all with discussion and camaraderie going into the evening. Special thanks to Eastern Golf Club and Tegan Kenez for their assistance. A new venue will be
required for 2016 as the course will be closed down shortly, but the Quest for the Brown Jacket will be on again,
Now it is on to the footy,
Go Friars,
Cheers, Sal
