This report is brought to you by BOQ - Frankston - call John Hicks for all banking services. The result for Old Hailebury Football Club were quite disheartening and that is taking nothing away from the quality opposition we ran into in all three games. The seniors started off ok amd were still a chance at 3/4 time but were blown away in the last quarter. The reserves were not in the game at all and the U 19s were outclassed.
There was a 2 goal wind favouring the southern end of Princes park when the ball was bounced at 2pm. Haileybury had first use of the wind and were keen to do well but so were St Kevins after their last result. The Haileybury boys were attacking the ball and were winning first use of it but the St Kevins pressure was also pretty intense. This caused us two problems - it caused us to go wide when the wind was blowing straight down the ground and it caused some inaccurate disposals for both teams. The quarter could be summarised as Haileybury's quarter for possesion but St Kevins made better use of the ball. 8 scoring shots to 5 but we still trailed by 2 points.
The Second quarter started with more pressure from the Old Haileybury team all round and by half way through the quarter the bloods were well and truely in the game. It was St Kevins that were having trouble finding the big sticks due to the pressure. The bloods managed to score 1 goal 1 of their own. But then the big guns of St Kevins were instrumental in getting the ball straight down the middle and goals resulted. The bloods pressure and defensive intensity started to wilt and by half time it was St Kevins by 35 points.
The coaches must have taken note of the first quarter and instructed the team to be more direct. The result was that we kicked 4 goals 1 for the quarter - a much improved conversion rate. However we let them in for 4 goals of their own against the wind.
The last quarter saw St Kevins with their tails up and the bloods were unable to keep up the pressure. We were badly beaten around the packs as the bigger more experienced bodies of St Kevins continually cleared the centre bounce despite breaking even in the ruck. As a consequence St Kevins kicked 6 goals 2 to our 4 points.
It appears we are quite competitive when the players are up and about - astute, energetic and conscentrating but if we lose that we quickly fall behind the quality teams.
