Round 13 saw the Bloods take on University Blues at their ground after both sides were well rested following the break. OHAFC were coming off narrow a loss to Fitzroy whereby we finished strongly however just failed to get across the line whilst Uni went down to Mazenod in what was the biggest upset of the year thus far. The previous time these sides met Uni won easily so it was going to be a good litmus test for the Bloods.
Uni controlled the majority of play in the first quarter however inaccurate kicking coupled with some fine defensive work from the Bloods meant that Uni led by only 10 points at quarter time. However in the 2nd qtr the Uni Blues midfielders started to control the game and they showed why they were sitting atop the Premier B grade. The students piled on 7 goals for the quarter to lead by 35 points at half time. The third quarter was an even affair and then the Bloods booted 4 last quarter goals to win the quarter. The final result was a 39 point victory for Uni however the Bloods 2nd half showed that we can match it with any Premier B grade side when our confidence is up. McLauchlan was once again our dominant backman whilst Taylor was very good again after his best afield performance versus Fitzroy. Nicolopolous showed that he is one of the premier forwards in the competition on his day booting 6 goals and was well supported by Covey who is having a very consistent season. The boys will take a lot of confidence from the 2nd half performance and are primed to take on Caulfield Grammarians at Glenhuntly Oval this Saturday.
The reserves led by stand in coach Brett O’Farrell were outclassed and went down to Uni Blues by 136 points. Backway and the ageless Mackenzie tried hard in the midfield and were amongst our best players.
The highlight of the day was a dominant victory by the Under 19’s over MHSOB. After losing to MHSOB earlier this year, the Bloods turned the tables and ran out victors by 13 goals. Meehan, O’Leary and McIntyre were brilliant all day.
