During his battle to overcome suppression in the Spring and Autumn period of Chinese history, Confucius was a reportedly quoted as saying, “gee a week is a very long time in football. “Totally agree!
After a massive loss and three quarters of no goals the Throng, BOO and The Oracle were nervous about their visit to the Beach Road oval. In freezing conditions, Floyds Flotilla (aka the Thirds) overcame a nervous start to only go down by a handful of goals. Great news again for Bloods football was the sign of 4 on the bench. Football great Brett O’Farrell was back in magenta and black and while noting his appearance The Oracle could not help but reminisce of how he single handedly took us to victory against Old Brighton so many years ago. Other football doyens spotted stripped for the 9:30 game included Sam Langford-Jones and Shane Walden. As they said during the NASA Space program, “where do we find such men!”
Brockys reserves found themselves locked in battle with a more-than-handy team and it was a tough day at the office for the Magoos. Jazz, Dave McCormick, Scotty, Mitch and new boy Jonno Roberts all contributed. The BGS Magoos look to be a fair side.
The main game saw the Bloods enter the ‘mini final’ with several key players out – Timmy L, Nashy, Alfie, Alkers – while club co-captain Hammer was back after his jaunt in Europe, so was Ferg and new recruits Donga and Dizzle.
Donga got the Bloods firing early to find Poppa within distance but alas the goal drought remained. Finally the dashing Bryce Courtney(Kellerman) found JRaff, who passed brilliantly to Joey Fisscher. Joey used his body well and truly converted. Goal drought broken mused The Oracle. The Bloods tackling was to be a hallmark of the day and with Collo, Lukey, Jimmy Paul leading the way the ball soon made its way to Collo to Donga to Brendan Gillen, who slotted our second. We were kicking with the wind but it was not difficult to score to the southern end and Old Brighton got 2 easy ones for the quarter. The umpire penalised the home side for dissent and Raff was able to slam home the Bloods 3rd for the quarter leaving a 2.1 to 3.5 score line at the end of the first break. The Oracle lamented about several lost chances but we were clearly the team in command.
The second quarter saw the tenacious Pinot continue his good form and with a high kick into the forward line he found Micky M camped under a tough ball. He truly converted into the growing wind. A great chain of terrific passing and running saw Jimmy Paul to Gledders to Hammer to Pinot who kicked our second for the quarter. The Bloods were standing firm and with Timmy Witherow, Stowie and JRaff all rebounding with conviction the home side squandered the wind. Highlight of the quarter was Bryce Courtney’s running dash down the outer wings and incredible second effort which saw him virtually mark his own kick into the forward line. He kicked truly and we were on a roll. While the loss of key BGS stars Anthony and Mentiplay was impacting on the home side, they scrambled a quick goal in red time to have 3.7 to 6.6 half time score.
The Oracle bought up big on jelly pythons for the premiership quarter and what a quarter it turned out to be. Our newly cobbled backline was standing firm and Adam “The General’ Weekes continued what the Duck, Rory James, would declare as “best and fairest form” in the second half. Hammer was back and Timmy W was giving us great dash from half back. After a few points Joey got the ball to Micky who found Poppa. He popped one over his head to see the ball sweep through the goals. Minutes later Raff found Trav with a blinder and he converted from 30 metres. Gledders, relishing the return of co-captain Hammer broke lose ad found Micky, who kicked our third. The Bloods were sensing a victory and some overzealous footy saw the home team claw back a goal. It made little difference as Ed found Raff and Micky marked for another 6 pointer. Some argy bargy saw Luke Pinot slot another after Taggs almost kicked one from the square. He was showing some real dash and when on song he is hard to catch. We kicked 6 goals for the quarter and with a 5.7 to 12.10 score line even BOO saw the task being beyond the home side.
The last quarter would understandably roll out to be a defensive arm wrestle. The ball rightly so stayed and remained on the playground wing for much of the quarter. Weeksey , Ferg, Donga and Gledders were all standing firm as scoring was getting harder at the southern end. Dewar’s kick into the wind was well positioned but rebound football saw the BGS boys finally get their first for the quarter after 14 minutes. The arm wrestle and superb tackling would see the ball up count escalate and it was with great joy that after 33 minutes Mary blew the siren and The Bloods scored one of the most meritorious wins in modern time – 12.11 to 7.15. Coach Seccull called everyone into the cramped change rooms to single out every player. Best for us was…..everyone and The Oracle thought that Gledders, Lukey Pinot, Timmy W, Raff, Jimmy, Collo and The General were among the very best. Next week we play another good team Ajax at our new home and that promises to be a blinder. The Oracle requires all reading this to attend.
The Oracle couldn’t get himself upstairs quick enough to enjoy some pretty cold and tasty beers. Be a liar if there weren’t great smiles surrounding those imbibing. BOO was back slapping all around and Southa was already talking work rosters for the coming week. As the Oracle trudged his way back to the car he couldn’t help but reflect on Confucius – it was only a matter of 6 weeks prior that BGS has poleaxed us by a million goals in a praccy game and today we reversed our fortunes. Yep, a week is a long time in footy!
Ando’s Army once again had a battle against AJAX who appeared to have 28 on the bench. Unlike the Beach Rd Oval, Princes Park saw relatively calm conditions and the ground was in perfect order. Unfortunately car accidents prevented the full complement taking the field early and the damage was done. It was a much better second half from the boys as the side settled down. Sec, Traigs and Sam Nicholls fought hard all day but once again a talented opposition were too good on the day.
The annual U/19s “Night” takes place next week. The boys will be on the road next week but will return to Princes Park where all supporters are encouraged to “get to know” the younger ones playing in the magenta and black.
The Haileybury First XVIII, coming off a 122 point win to Wesley, faced the challenge of playing Xavier at Xavier. A massive challenge under normal circumstances, but even bigger on the day of the homeside's Maytime Fair, Xavier's biggest day of the year, their annual Fête. The build up was all about making sure you could be your best in front of a massive parochial crowd. In the lead up, Matty Lloyd told some stories about his travels to Adelaide and the theme for the day became "21 v 40,000 - Silence the Crowd!"
And "Silence the Crowd" they did. Haileybury stunned the home crowd with a terrific first quarter, jumping out of the blocks with a five goal to zero first quarter. Xavier had squandered opportunities, and the Bloods had made them pay. Xavier then sent numbers behind the ball to stop Haileybury's dominance, but the magenta and black still went into the main break 40 points up.
Xavier came out firing and a hard fought 3rd quarter saw Xavier on top and working their way back into the game. While Haileybury weren't playing well, they still only kept the home team to 3 goals for the quarter. The Xavier throng made their way behind the home teams goals and spurred them on to get the margin back to a 15 point deficit early in the final term. Every contest became ever so important and the Bloods eventually managed to break the fight back and ...... "Silence the Crowd!"
The experience of playing in front of such a large parochial crowd should inspire the boys to bigger and better things in the future. Next week presents as another challenge but of a different kind - Geelong College at home, but with changes a plenty due to 6 boys being unavailable because of
Victorian commitments.
Final Score:
Haileybury College 11.6.72
Xavier College 6.13.49
Best players: Will Blakey, Nathan Freeman, Sean McLaren, Tommy Capp,
Brodie Connelly, Karl Amon
