Gingin vs Goomalling
Sunday 10th August
Perfect weather conditions saw the Blues travel west to take on the Eagles. The Gingin Reserves team coached by Paul ‘Sonny’ Fewster from the sideline rather than on field of late (rumours of a retirement are spreading fast), kicked the day off nicely for the hometown with a 160-point win over their opponents. Goomalling started the game well and kept up with the Eagles, kicking 2 goals in the first quarter to Gingin’s 4. Unfortunately for the Blues, though, they only managed to score 1 point for the rest of the game as Gingin’s fitness and skill prevailed. Gingin up-and-comer Keegan Woods strutted his stuff all over the ground and was named best player on the day. Seasoned player Glenn Britten showed he’s ‘still got it’, kicking 8 goals and assisting several others. Brayden Rule is certainly following in his Dad’s footsteps as he develops into a very handy player. Jarrad Sewell bagged a lazy 10 and Edward ‘Eddy’ Grant used his speed to win the footy. For Goomalling, Glen Matkovic was named best on ground followed by Rex Rowles, Troy Harris, Callum Oneill and Alex Leeming. The final score read Gingin 27.11(173) to Goomalling 2.1(13).
The League game was set to be a close one with the last encounter between these two sides seeing Goomalling victors by just 2 points on their home turf. At the quarter time break Goomalling led by 4 points but the second quarter was well and truly used by the Eagles to redeem themselves as they managed to put 9 goals on the board while keeping Goomalling to just 1. The already high standard of football went to another level in the second half with even goals scored for each side in the third quarter. Unfortunately for the Blues, though, the damage was already done and the Eagles went on the have a good final quarter to finish the game with a 12 goal victory. Gingin’s Matthew Bycroft appeared to have a successful return from injury and was named best on ground. Justin Mackean continued his consistent form this year with yet another good game. Nathan Sims was ‘Ballantyne-like’ in the forward line kicking 5 goals and Scott Cocking, Craig Ellar and Rheece Bartel were also good. For Goomalling, Tyson Bird was named on best on ground or his 6-goal effort followed by Jordan Leeson, Josh Siegert, Brett Speldewinde and Reece Duffield. The final score read Gingin 20.18(138) to Goomalling 9.7(61).
