Perfect weather conditions and a charity ‘Masters’ match brought Gingin’s biggest crowd ever through the gates last Sunday. The schedule for the day was run a little differently with the Reserves game starting earlier to allow for the Masters game to be played before the League took to the oval. The Gingin Reserves were slightly slower than usual to get going against the Cougars, maybe a few sleepyheads put out by the earlier start. They did, though, manage to kick four and kept their opponents to no-score in the first quarter. The second quarter was much the same with Calingiri having their fair share of the ball kicking 2 goals 2. It was after half time that the Eagles powered on to kick a total of 23 goals. The final score read Gingin 23.15(153) to Calingiri 2.4(16). Best player on the day for Gingin was Christopher ‘Doggy’ Anderson who has been playing some consistently good games this year. Young-gun Brady Day was very good as were Jordan Tai, Jack Mackey and Brayden Worth. For Calingiri, Kyle Taylor and Lincoln Mead were named in the best followed by Joseph Woods who kicked a good goal.
The Gingin-Rockingham ‘Masters Game’ organised by the Gingin Football Club was a chance to raise some money for Michael Gunton who received burns to 40 percent of his body in a tragic, random attack last year. The game was played in 4x15 minute quarters and saw the Rockingham Master’s take on the Gingin L.I.M.P (Legends Imitating Mens Past) team. A bit of fun, some cheeky umpiring calls and a couple of pulled hamstrings made for a fantastic spectacle and all for a great cause. The feedback from the Rockingham players and supporters, many who hung around to watch the League game, was all positive and both teams have agreed to make the ‘Michael Gunton Masters Match’ an annual event. A huge thank you to all those that helped out in the lead up to and on the day. An extra special thanks to Lynley Fewster for the original idea and for organising the event.
The league game that followed was set to be a ‘ripper’ with a history of tough, close matches between the two sides. A very even first quarter saw the Eagles lead by just 1 point at the first break. Gingin’s defensive pressure headed by Matt King managed to keep Calingiri goal-less in the second quarter and gave their own forwards, notably captain Geoff Rouse, the opportunity to kick a couple of goals and take the lead out to 26 points at half time. Calingiri came out strong in the third, proving they weren’t going to let the game slip and got back to within 11 points to set up a thriller final term. It was very high pressure football and Calingiri managed to bag a couple in a row to take the lead mid-way through the quarter. The match-up of the day was between Calingiri’s Luke George and Gingin’s Aaron White who both finished in the best for their respective sides. With only minutes on the clock, one last effort by Gingin saw a run of play down the far boundary side into the hands of Aaron White 30 metres out from goal who made the scandalous decision to pass off to Justin Mackeon. Justo, cool, calm collected as always, put the ball through the sticks to snatch back the lead. Gingin managed to hold on and at the final siren the score read Gingin 17.11(113) to Calingiri 16.11(107). Best on ground for Gingin was Kirk Bartel who played very smart football and was handy through the middle. For Calingiri, Luke George was named best for the day followed closely by Luke Maindok, Blake Coleman, Andrew Leroy and Lester Snooke. Thank you to Calingiri for their understanding in allowing the game times to be changed. A great day and we wish Michael all the very best with his recovery.
