Round 2 saw Tigerland make the trip West but not even Trewy and his trio of Wilson's could ruffle the Eagles' feathers. Arguably the two quickest sides in the competition for a number of years now, Dowerin and Gingin have become known for their goal-for-goal matches and miniscule margins. This was not to be the case, though, come Sunday afternoon as the Eagles outflew the Black and Gold.
The Gingin Reserves side coached by Aaron Crofts showed that they will be the team to beat again this year. Yep, the call has been made, hand them the flag now and be done with it. With bigman Sewell out, who would step up and kick Gingin's goals??? Introducing... Jack Haenni. Named best on ground and rightfully so, young Jack kicked 4 goals (not bad for a backman) and showed all-class. Nathan Sims bagged 4 and ran all day (sorry Crofty I don't think you'll have Nato to play around with for much longer). Captain Jarrod Carter was calm under pressure and Chris 'Chucky' Richards was named in the best producing the kick of the day. The score blew out to read Gingin 24.20.164 to Dowerin 4.2.26.
The league game was shaping up to be yet another close match at the quarter time break as both sides were showing flashes of brilliance and Gingin lead by a meazly 2 points. Now I don't know what words of wisdom were shared between club champion Brendon 'Buzzy' Fewster and Geoff Rouse at quarter time but it must have been good because from that moment on, Rouse went on to kick a total of 9 goals and seemed untouchable, no doubt quite the headache for the Tiger backline. Rouse was named best on ground followed by Ben King who tagged Dowerin's best and clearly played his role perfectly. Lanky lad (who's not so lanky anymore) Andrew 'Sticks' Fewster played one of his best and kicked a handy 2. It seems Andrew (aka Bud) might just start to steal some spotlight away from his 3 elder sisters, gun netballers (or so they think). Moving down back to Bryce Saurine and Alan Barry who both had great games. The two 'Matt's' (Bycroft and Oliveri) were dependable through the middle and Glenn Britten showed that age is no barrier.
Make no mistake, Dowerin showed glimpses of their old selves and will no doubt be a top four side again this season. On this particular day, though, it was Gingin who played 4 quarters of footy and thus came away with the win. The final score read Gingin 19.7.121 to Dowerin 6.9.45.
Time for the boys to rest and recover with the bye this weekend. The next game sees yet another trek across to Wongan Hills. This will be Round 1 of hockey as well as the new netball competition. Make sure you arrive early to catch the Gingin Eagles Netball Team take on Wongan-Ballidu starting at 12noon.
Lastly, a big GOOD LUCK and TRAVEL SAFE to Bronson Bartel and Chris Samata, who begin their travels to America this week. Do us proud boys and show those yanks that their poor-excuse-for-a-game NFL has nothing on our 'Aussie Rules' (Jase I'm sure you are the only 'yank' who won't mind me saying this). Which brings me to a big CONGRATULATIONS to Jason Wilhelm on making the USAFL Revolution side!
