The 2011 Gingin Football Club season kicked off with training back in February. It was then that the year began to show promise as week after week the club grew and the teams started to form. Whether it be the league boys seeking redemption from a premiership loss last year or the reserves planning back to back premierships, it was evident from the very beginning that the boys were ready to go all the way. Under the reins of League Coach Christian Kelly and Reserves Coach Paul Fewster, both teams went through the year undefeated (a Mortlock Football league record) and so snatched the minor premierships for both grades. After a very close finals series in 2010, the boys were ready to tackle anything that came their way. A relatively easy run through the semi-final and so came a wet and windy game day at Goomalling. The reserves team led by Captain Adam Trinder did the supporters proud and blitzed Goomalling and provided the league team with the motivation to match their efforts. The League team led by Captain Justin Kuhl ran onto the ground and soon after put the demons of the past to rest and ran away from the Toodyay side to claim victory once and for all. In the reserves, Jake Edwards was awarded best on ground on the day after kicking 2 goals and in wet conditions made the most of the opportunities that came his way. In the league, Rheece Bartel had a blinder to top off a great season and won the Phil Mincheton award for the best on ground.
The Gingin Football Club dinner and trophy presentation night was held on the 10th of September and topped off a record-making season for the club. The boys suited up and walked the red carpet ready for a night of reminiscing the year that was. The Reserves Fairest and Best went to Aaron Crofts after a solid year of putting his body on the line. Most Consistent went to Mitchell Cocking, Most Courageous went to Tom Woodruff and Best Utility went to Bradley Cook. Most Improved was awarded to Jordan Tai, Leading Goal Kicker went to Jarrad Sewell, Best in Finals to Coach Paul Fewster and The Coaches Award was received by Chris Richards.
The League Fairest and Best was awarded to Rheece Bartel for a consistent year of run through the middle of the ground. Rheece was also awarded the trophy for Best in Finals. Most Consistent went to Matt McGrath, Best Utility to Jake Akmens and Most Improved went to Andrew Fewster. The Coaches Award was given to Chris Samata, Best Backman awarded to Bryce Saurine and Leading Goal Kicker went to Geoff Rouse. The Rising Star Award went to 17 year old Kirk Bartel for a well deserved climb up through the reserves side to play most of the season in the League team. The Presidents trophy was awarded to youngster Matt King for his efforts boundary umpiring throughout the home and away season. Lastly, secretary Rod Price was the recipient of Best Club Person for his ongoing commitment to the club.
Special mentions go to our Mortlock Association winners Brendon Rouse (leading goal kicker in the reserves), Geoff Rouse (leading goal kicker in the league) and Rheece Bartel who won the Bendigo Bank people’s choice best player for 2011. The Gingin Football Club was awarded Mortlock Champion Club for the second year running.
