SOME of Bendigo’s young guns swapped their footy’s for cooking pans and utensils on Tuesday.
A group of Bendigo Pioneers players are taking part in a Bendigo TAFE program which is teaching the aspiring AFL players how to cook.
Bendigo TAFE teaching development manager for hospitality Greg Broom said the inaugural initiative would run for six weeks.
He said it was important for the teenagers to become more independent especially if they would go on to play in the AFL.
“The players have all had to move out of home, so it is imperative that they learn how to cook,” Broom said.
“Everything they will learn is all based on the Australian Guidelines for Healthy Eating.
“We are teaching them how to prepare meals that is attractive to a younger cohort.
“Food that which can be prepared in a healthy and nutritious manner and that can be made on an economical budget and within a fairly quick time frame.”
Groom hoped the program could be rolled out to other sporting clubs in the greater Bendigo region.
Pioneers coach David Newett said 75 per cent of his players weren’t from Bendigoso it was important they had the right life-skills to continue to perform at the highest level.
