The Coburg Lions put together two solid halves to overcome the Northern Blues in a practice match at VISY Park on Saturday.
The Lions named two separate sides for each half of football to give every player an even chance to show what they’re capable of for the upcoming season.
The Blues kicked the first goal of the game, but would not score for the rest of the quarter as a ferocious Coburg outfit led by Morgan Evans out in front banged on four goals in succession to lead by 16 points at quarter time.
Stoppages were key for the Lions in the second quarter as they controlled the ball in the midfield but struggled in converting inside 50s to into scores.
A more resilient Northern Blues side took a hold of the game in the second quarter with four unanswered goals, but a late goal from Charlie Van Der Byl got the margin back under a goal just before half time.
Ozgur Uysal was pivotal in getting the ball down to the forwards racking up 22 possessions in the first half. Elsewhere, Michael Hartley’s presence down back was assuring as his fellow teammates held Northern to a slender lead going into the second half.
After half time, the stage was set for fresh legs to overwhelm the Blues and run away with a victory. Nathan Thomas led the Lions by providing key running and setting up transition play to assist new key forward Lech Featherstone with plenty of marking opportunities.
Matthew Clark was also key in his small forward role, applying valuable forward pressure and providing smart plays to assist Fabian Brancatisano in front of goal who finished his half of football with two goals.
At three quarter time Coburg had kicked five second-half goals to Northern’s one to go into the final break with a 23 point lead.
In the final quarter, Coburg went goal for goal with Northern to consolidate its ¾ time lead to run out 27-point winners at VISY Park.
A promising performance from the Lions as we look forward to our intra-club practice match later this week.
