A Big shout out to our past Port Hunter Juniors playing D1 college basketball in the USA:

Two past Port Hunter juniors Trace Evans at the University of Missouri - Kansas City (KC ‘Roos), and Keegan Harvey at the College of Charleston who begin their sophomore seasons at their NCAA D1 programs.

As juniors playing in Newcastle, Trace and Keegan were often overlooked for Hunters Division 1 rep teams, state teams, SPP and elite programs – but kept working hard and excelling in their age groups in the local junior club competitions.

Another past Port Hunter junior, Isabel Palmer is at the University of Utah. Before she ventured overseas, Isabel attended the Australian Centre of Excellence after playing juniors for Newcastle Hunters, NSW Country, and the Australia U17’s.

Isabel served as team captain and starter for Australia at the 2018 U17 World Cup team, battling through injury before scoring 17 points in the semi-final, leading Australia to the bronze medal.

About the Club

The Port Hunter Basketball Club was founded in the early 1960's and is the oldest Basketball Club in Newcastle. We celebrated our 50yr anniversary in 2014.  It had its beginnings as the Stockton National Fitness Basketball Club. With the success of the Club and the expansion of the member base through the 1970's the Club was renamed in 1980 to the Port Hunter Basketball Club.

Last year the club had 44 teams competing in the Junior Club Competition with 4 teams in the U8's and 9 teams in the U10's competition.

Training is held at the YWCA in Dawson Street Cooks Hill and Genisis Darby St. Days and times to be confirmed as Newcastle Basketball now organise Club training venues.

Our most successful player is Suzy Batkovic who played her junior club basketball with the Port Hunter Club. Suzy was in the Opal team which attend the London Olympics and played in the Townsville Fire team in the WNBL.
