Stephens makes the grade

The Mayne Football Club congratulates Andrew Stephens on his selection to the AFL Umpiring panel in 2014.

Andrew is a former Mayne junior who humbly says “he wasn’t much of a footballer but was keen to stay involved in AFL”. Andrew started with the Tigers in under 8’s playing many seasons before looking to try his chances as a Junior Club Umpire. Mayne President Russell Ditchburn recalls Andrew keenly pressing him as a 12 year old for an opportunity to be a club umpire. As soon as Andrew was old enough at 13, he was given an opportunity and it was evident that he was clearly a natural whistleblower.

Andrew came back in under 16’s to give footy another go but was unlucky to sustain a significant injury. It was clearly fateful that umpiring was Andrew’s future.

Andrew’s younger brothers David and Bill also played their junior footy for the Tigers and Bill continues today as a key defender in the senior team.

The Stephens family are true community people with father Richard and mother Alice both being involved with the club performing important roles. Richard performed committee roles in the juniors and continues today as the club Auditor while Alice performed the enormous task of proof reading and referencing the Club History book “From Glory to Heartbreak”.

The club wishes Andrew every success in his continued umpiring career.
