Western Magpies are looking to join the QWAFA and help establish women’s teams. The Western Magpies AFC has ushered two women onto the board for the first time in the club’s history and are scouting for more women to join the ranks.
The Magpies have also applied to join AFL Queensland’s new women’s league, the Queensland Women’s Amateur Football Association. The QWAFA will act as a development league, enabling clubs to establish the foundation of their women’s teams.
This competition is likely to consist of teams at University of Queensland, Coorparoo, Carrara, Caboolture and Griffith Moorooka.
Played over 14 rounds, QWAFA teams require a minimum of 12 players per side, with a focus on developing players’ skills and continuing to enhance their familiarity with the game.
Football director Peter McClennan said the club had women’s teams in the past and was looking forward to revitalising female participation for the Magpies.
“The new board came together late last year and one of the things that underpins our club going forward is female football,” Mr McClennan said. “We want to make sure we invest in it and get it up and running again.”
“Ladies who have followed AFL for a number of years and have a passion for the game can come and play.”
Board members Cherie Morrison said female volunteers and players meant a stronger club. “We’re scouting and we need plenty more women,” she said.
