I think there is one more game before we see our beloved scribe come back, Mr John Webb!
Today was Alex Orr’s 100th game for Bendigo. Well done Champ!
Bendigo were playing Chadstone at home, who thrashed the Warhawks by 21 goals in their previous encounter this year. This was due to Chadstone dropping 5 Div 1 players to play in their Div 3 side!
It was going to be the same scenario where Chadstone’s Div 1 team had a bye, however I was hoping that because it was in Bendigo it would not be the case.
The sun was out and it was another glorious day to play lacrosse. Chadstone started with ten players, while Bendigo scrambled 11 players. Thankfully Angus arrived half way through the third quarter, which made it 12.
It was a tight affair with lots of shots thrown by Chadstone but Gino was on fire in the first quarter. Bendigo scored first due to some great passing from Alex Orr to find Ian who hit the back of the net. But late in the quarter Chadstone pegged it back and levelled. Chadstone had another player arrive just before the end of the quarter.
The second quarter saw Chadstone score 4 goals, which one had hit Gino stick and rolled in. Bendigo scored one goal from a brilliant run down the right flank by Mark Reader who passed to Ian to score his second for the game. There were plenty of shots on goal but Chadstone goal keeper was on the ball.
At half time the score was 5 to 2 Chadstone’s way.
The centres were clearly won by Bendigo’s Brett Ruiz and Rusty Crofts, with Alex, Steve, Mason and Tim picking up the ball from their effects.
The third quarter saw a tight affair with Angus turning up half way through, however Chadstone had score 2 goals prior to his arrival. Suddenly Bendigo sparked up with Alex scoring, followed by Angus individual effort from the face-off position. Chadstone pegged a goal back catching Gino’s stick again and crossing over the goal line. However, there was a beautiful Tyrone body check clearing the goal circle of Chadstone attacker.
The fourth quarter got away from Bendigo but Bendigo’s defence were fearless; with Mark Reader throwing his controlled stick checks which not only dislodged the ball but the player’s stick as well.
Chadstone’s goals were mainly from long shots screened by players which made it difficult to get a clear view of the ball. They scored another three goals for the quarter, with Bendigo scoring a brilliant sole goal from long pole midfielder, Tim Davies.
The final score was 11 to 5, Chadstone’s way, but a better result than the first round effort. Steve Everton didn’t play the final quarter due to a shoulder dislocation, which after the game he popped it back into place, a true tough guy!
Votes went to Alex Orr (3 Club votes and 1 Association) for a truly 4 quarter effort, Angus Anglioletta who played for one and half brilliant quarters and Tim Davies for his gut running midfield efforts.
Thanks to Lester Young for his refereeing and Christian Iuliano for his scoring.
Next week is an away game to Altona, bus leaving Bendigo by 11.00am.
Nick Goddard will be playing his 50th game.
Gino Iuliano,
Senior player
