Lacrosse Reports
Men’s Division 3, MCCBendigo v Camberwell at the Albert Ground 19 June 2021
Returning from the Covid break, we were playing Camberwell at the Albert. This was round 10. Round 8 was postponed due to covid, round 9 was our bye, and last week was the Queen’s Birthday weekend, which was a competition bye for all.
So, after three weekends we were back at it.
It was a sunny but cool morning but pleasant for lacrosse. The clouds rolled in to cover the sun’s rays in the afternoon once the match started.
Last time we played Camberwell, they had both their higher teams (State League and Div1) on byes and they didn’t drop too many players, hardly any. This time their division 1 team had a bye. However, the main difference between the last meeting to now was that they had 2 players that played State League level. One of these players scored half their goals, 9 in total, and never lost a centre face off. We also encountered 4 players that had played most of their games, before today, in Div1.
Camberwell had 16 players to our 13 (7 Bendigo). The team missed Mike Bell who takes no prisoners in D. Rusty’s was a late withdrawal and we missed his solid performance in centre face-offs, plus a couple of MCC players.
The team tried their best, but they couldn’t contain the Camberwell skilled players.
The team went down 18 to 5.
Matt Saxon fought all day in the centres, with Dylan on the midfield running up and down the field. Alex and Ian did their part in front of goals scoring 2 goals each. Tim and Jordan played very well and due to this were asked to play on the dangerous Camberwell attackers. This was a feather in their cap because it suggests the coach had a lot of trust in their ability. Gino didn’t have the best game in goals.
On the positive side, we learnt a lot as a team that we can change and adapt in D and attack when required to do so. The communication between Coach and players is steadily improving as we progress through the season.
Progress scores were:
1st 4 to 2,
2nd 6 to 2 (2 goals to 1),
3rd 13 to 3 (7 goals to 1), and
4th 18 to 5 (5 goals to 2)
Votes went to Bendigo players, 3 Jordan O’Meara, 2 Tim Davis, and 1 Alex Orr.
Goals: 2 Alex Orr and Ian Lock, 1 Barry Nugent.
Assist: 2 Matt Mellor and 1 Jordan O’Meara and Matt Saxon.
I would like to thank Lester Young for his refereeing and carpooling, Jarrod (who was unavailable due to soft tissues issues in his foot) for scoring. Thanks to Paula (washing uniforms) and Mark for assisting with the packing up. Special thanks to Jordan for carpooling.
Next week we have Malvern at the Albert with the match commencing at 2pm. MCC Div1 has a bye so we may get 2 players that will drop and a couple of U17 players. This will lift our numbers and Gino will manage the bench for the coach.
The bus is still out of action so we need a couple of people to volunteer to carpool, which they will be compensated.
