2019 was quite a good year for the club, with good results on the field and some new initiatives off-field.
Men’s Div 3
2019 was our best season yet as our Men’s div 3 team won 8 matches
and finished 6th out of 10 teams.
(Admittedly we suffered some very large defeats as the 3 top teams Malvern, Williamstown,
and Footscray were so much stronger than the other 7)
In actual games (not including goals awarded in walkovers), we threw 118 goals and
had 117 against us, our first positive goal difference.
We had 15 regular players with several other occasional players.
Our MVP was Alex Orr, with Tim Davis as runner-up. 10 players received votes during the season. Alex Orr was third in the LV best player for Div 3 with 16 votes and Tim Davis was equal 8th with 11 votes.
We congratulate 2 players, John Webb and Brett Ruiz, on reaching 100 games this season.
Women/Girls
We were also represented in the Women's B grade competition by 6 girls who played
As part of the MCC/Bendigo team in that comp; they played a total of 40 games between them.
Abbey Saxon was awarded as our MVP for 2019,
We owe a huge thanks to Gino and the various family members for their dedication
in travelling to Melbourne on most Sundays during the season - it is quite a task for them all.
U15 boys
We had 2 players Mathew Saxon & Christian Iuliano who each played 11 matches for the
MCC U/15 team. They were a great asset to MCC, throwing 40 goals between them,
which was 35% of MCC's total goals for the season.
They also played most weeks in the Div 3 senior team and did extremely well.
Both were selected in the Northern Warriors squad in the ALA National U/15
championships played in Adelaide in first week of October.
They have a very bright future in the game. Thank you boys for your tremendous efforts
during the year. Even more thanks to Gino for most of the driving of the boys to Melbourne most Saturday mornings.
This year we began an evening mixed indoor competition in the Girton gym. So far it has attracted a good number of participants, including some new people and several former players – men, women, adults, juniors are all welcome.
We continue to look out for an alternative home ground to the Maiden Gully oval, but without success so far due to the shortage of available grounds in Bendigo.
