1st Grade – Belconnen Magpies lost to Queanbeyan 110 to 65
Belconnen travelled to Queanbeyan for 1 of 3 home games at Dairy Farmers Park and walked into a Queanbeyan Tigers team high on confidence after a stellar start to the 2010 season. This was compounded by winning the first tap of the day and putting the football straight down Mark Armstrong throat and BMFC conceded 6 points in the opening 30 seconds of the game. Conversely in the next 30 seconds when BMFC took the football down the other end into a howling breeze we missed a simple shot on goal and that summed up our day. We had multiple opportunities to challenge however Queanbeyan moved the football quicker and slicker then BMFC. At half time to be 10.1 to 5.7 down probably left our players who are down on confidence in a precarious position kicking back into the breeze and we could bridge the scoring gap and mount a challenge. In hindsight it is probably good to get these types of game out of our system in the early part of the season and hopefully we can put some scoring opportunities ourselves together and hold opposition teams, as we can not afford to concede 17 goals in a game and expect to win. Across the day we had few winners, but Graham, Talsma, Viney, L. Bennett all battled hard.
Next week is the unveiling of our premiership flag, and we hope for a vocal crowd as we battle Ainslie in a replay of last years GF.

2nd Grade – Belconnen Magpies beat Queanbeyan 74 to 56
The reserves took on last year’s premiers Queanbeyan on Saturday at Queanbeyan on a slippery and windy day. The main instruction was to get the ball going our way as quickly as possible and the boys responded well in doing this. Dom Bunyan dominated the middle with hard ball gets and using his pace to break away from the stoppages. Liam Early backed up his strong tackling with getting the ball out to our runners as well. Our backline was under a bit of pressure due to their height advantage, however they all stood up to the challenge and were great in restricting the opposition to 7 goals for the day. It was great to see the younger players like Cam Burdett, Joss Whitford, Kieran Ferns, Brady Daw and Dean Fair all contribute when their opportunity arose. It was a gutsy and grinding win in tough conditions.
3rd Grade – Belconnen Magpies beat Tuggeranong 87 to 41
The 3s backed up last week’s crushing win over Murrumbidgee with another solid performance, defeating the Hawks at the spiritual home of BMFC at Kippax Oval. Even with 5 changes to last weeks’ side, the Pies were able to play an excellent brand of team orientated football, and the result was a hard fought 8 goal win in cold and wet conditions. A 7 goal to 1 first half set the boys up for the win, but only after holding off a gallant attempt by Tuggeranong to get within 4 goals in the latter stages of the 3rdquarter. The midfield were able to win most of the centre clearances, and in the first two quarters the forward line took a lot of uncontested possession in the forward 50m. Our smallest forward in Dawso was also grabbing the footy like it was dry weather footy, on the end of some good kicking from BOG McDevitt and co.
After the long break Tuggeranong came out a different side, and actually matched us with 5 goals for the second half. As with the first two rounds, Mick Henry was Mr Reliable down back, constantly winning contested possession and then rewarding himself with calculated delivery up the ground. Cam Rose also provided run and carry on his wing, Tales was superb again, and Coatesy had his best game of the season to date, despite being split in half by a Hawks strong man! Again, injuries took their toll on the team, with a shoulder injury to Macca and Jono with a calf both having their game cut short. A quality weekend lies ahead with the first triple header for the season with 3s 4s and Women’s all play ADFA at ADFA on Saturday in what should be three hard games. Given the recent history of physical encounters with ADFA in the 3s, it should make for an exciting spectacle.

4th Grade – Belconnen Magpies beat Cootamundra 118 to 21
On a rubbish day for footy the Pies turned up not knowing what to expect against a Cootamundra side that had caused a few early season upsets. The Pies came ready to play and jumped out to a first quarter lead that was rarely headed. The usual suspects shone on the dull day, JD, Reardo and Ports continuing their strong early season form. Most pleasing for the coaching staff was the performance of the boys coming into the side for their first game. Junior JD (Brendan Ellwood) and Cam were both fantastic with their head over the footy and clean skills in the wet conditions. Southy and Cooky continued their footy education, Southy in particularly dominating up and down the wings. Pleasing to see Horse return after 12 month injury layoff as well.
Overall a fantastic performance that saw the side prevail by 15 goals against a pretty strong opposition. The good form of the new players, while awesome for the team, will be a nightmare for coaching staff in the coming weeks as returning players try to fit into a really strong outfit. This week the boys are up against ADFA on Saturday at ADFA oval in what should be another solid hit out against the always fit defence boys. See you there.

Under 18’s – Belconnen Magpies beat Queanbeyan 85 to 63
The U18s travelled interstate to Queanbeyan in what promised to be a tough encounter. The weather conditions were difficult for both teams. Once again Zac Sheather was a focal point up forward kicking another 5 goals. Daniel Jordan played as though it was a dry day and once again kicked truly kicking 4 fantastic goals. Stephen Meikle is adjusting to playing in the midfield and continues to be dangerous around goals. Bradley Posch, Alex Richens and Andrew Courir were rock solid in defence. Jordan Harper continues to rack up vital possessions all over the ground and is becoming a menace for opposition sides. Vineel Dutt was best afield with a fine performance in the ruck.
