Thirds Match Report – Round 15
The 1st qtr started pretty well and we played some good team football for the first 15 minutes, before we had one of our regular little lapses in concentration and ANU quickly put us under the pump. It was only a combination of good pressure and accountability from our backline, and some inaccurate kicking from ANU that still had us in touch at the break. The 2nd qtr was where we played one of our best qtrs for the year and were probably in control for a good part of it, but once again lack of composure bringing the ball into our fwd line with delivery that gave our fwds absolutely no chance to take possession were the order of the day. Whereas ANU made good use of their opportunities up fwd, which was very frustrating for the coach and the players considering the effort that was being put in by everyone.
Consequently we came out a little bit flat after half time and ANU scored some easy goals and it took us about 5 minutes to switch back on and start to fight it out again. Yet again for the last five minutes of the qtr we lapsed in our pressure and ANU got some easy ISFs and a couple of quick goals to finish the qtr, so the boys were very flat at the break. Considering how down we appeared to be when we started the last qtr it looked like ANU were going to run away with it, but to the boys credit they decided to step up again and we toughed out the qtr quite well, but once more failing to capitalise on some good opportunities we had up forward with poor delivery.
Summary:
It was nice to have 22 players, as well as two emergencies and once again the effort was very good with only a few small lapses in concentration here and there. The main disappointment once more was our lack of impact on the scoreboard and the main positive was keeping ANU to 16 goals whereas in our last meeting they kicked 31. So once again the good signs continue as we appear to be moving in the right direction.
