Thirds Match Report – Round 7
Report
It was nice to line up against a team where the match-ups were reasonably balanced. For the 1st Qtr Eastlake settled into their task very quickly, kicking with a strong breeze and made the most of their thrusts forward whereas we worked very hard against the wind only to watch simple turn over’s burn us. The 2nd Qtr was another tough one for us where we struggled in attack and the back line worked over time in defence. It was a solid effort, but simple skill errors and the fact we forgot to play basic football and went chasing stats again really hurt us. We didn’t score and Eastlake had a comfortable lead at half time.
The 3rd qtr started much the same as the 2nd ended, but about half way through we started gaining some control in the stoppages, our work rate lifted and the talk was suddenly loud and constructive, and we started playing football again. For the last 10 minutes of the
qtr there was some good football from both sides and we finally started applying pressure back on Eastlake. The last qtr was a
pretty even tussle around the ground, as we had a good run in the centre and at the stoppages and finally made numerous raids into our
forward line, but once again failed to capitalise. But it was pleasing to watch the boys show that they can play football and that they can be competitive.
Summary
There
were another 10 changes this week and one of those being Dave Stewart, and we also used three different players in our on ball rotations, we got off to another not so smooth start. It was about halfway through the 3rd qtr the on-ballers got used to working with each other and we started winning our fair share of stoppages and with some good team work we were quite competitive for the rest of the game. The score could have been a bit closer, but simple skill kicking errors hurt our forward thrusts time and again. What
was pleasing was our running in both directions, with some reasonable accountability and the fact we ran out the game, so at the end there were some good positive signs.
