Swans Win Flag in a Thriller
Coreen 13.10.88 defeated Cor/R’glen 12.11.83
Coreen snared their first premiership flag since 1980 when they defeated Corowa/Rutherglen by five points in a thrilling Coreen League grand final on Saturday.
The Swans led by six points at three quarter time and survived a tense last quarter to hold on to their slender lead.
There were some surprise moves from the Coreen selection committee which attracted the attention of the 3000 strong crowd before the match started.
Gavin Jones, who kicked nine goals for the reserves team last week, was elevated to a senior position on the half forward line.
Shane Burdon, who was named on a half forward flank for Coreen, lined up at full forward and Neville Tait, named at full forward, went to centre half forward.
For a while it looked as though the changes would not work.
The Swans were getting the ball, but inaccuracy was letting them down.
Coreen kicked 2.6 in the first term to Corowa/Rutherglen’s 5.0
A highlight of that quarter was a brilliant 70m goal by ruck rover Graeme Hansen.
Coreen only had four points at that stage and Hansen’s goal seemed to lift the Swans.
Hansen’s brilliance was matched by Corowa/Rutherglen’s Rob McMaster.
McMaster’s aerial work on the half forward flank was magnificent.
It was the Roos’ turn to kick points in the second quarter.
They added 4.5 to Coreen’s 6.1 to make the difference only four points – in their favour – at half time.
Dominic Carroll was starting to assert his authority in the centre for Coreen and seemed to have the edge against Corowa/Rutherglen’s Greg Peake who came under notice without being as dominant.
One of Corowa/Rutherglen’s best for that quarter was Robbie Fitzgerald who dominated on one wing.
But Coreen’s Irwin McCartney balanced the books by starting to get into the action on the other side of the ground.
Coreen hit the front in the dying stages of the third quarter, the first time they had led for the match.
Corowa/Rutherglen had their chances in the last quarter with Gavin Jones and Shane Burdon trying desperately to post the winning majors.
But some good defensive work for Coreen, through Mark Hanrahan, Rohan McCartney, and Lex Thornton, held the Roos at bay.
Hanrahan had a torrid tussle with Nick Myer who finished with five goals.
Coreen’s Neville Tait was well held by Tony Livingstone.
Jones and Burdon finished with four goals each for Coreen.
Corowa/Rutherglen’s Wayne Schultz was the best of the rovers and forward pocket Phil Coulston tried hard without being a star for the Roos.
