Flag victory is the icing on the cake after top year for Carroll
Anthony’s Carroll’s fairytale season came to a fitting climax when Coreen won the Coreen League premiership against Corowa/Rutherglen at Buraja on Saturday.
Carroll, played a leading role in his team’s 34 pint victory.
The premiership came in his first season as coach and followed his victory in the league’s best and fairest award – the Archie Dennis Medal.
Carroll, better known as ‘Psyscho’, was also given two awards as the best player on the ground in the premiership decider.
But immediately after the match when he received his award, Carroll played down the individual honour.
“Grand finals are not won by one person,” he said.
“It was a team effort, we will keep this trophy that way.
“Both the reserves and seniors have worked hard all year and deserve this success.
“By gee this is a great club.”
Earlier, Coreen’s reserves had won in a high standard match to give the club a premiership double.
Carroll certainly had a significant role in his team’s premiership.
But some people rated some of his teammates marginally ahead of him for their contributions to the victory.
Two players who rated highly were centre half back Craig Kingston and promising centre half forward David Anderson.
Kingston conceded height and weight to Corowa/Rutherglen opponent Rob McMaster, but outpointed him for four quarters.
It was no mean feat considering that McMaster was the player that turned the preliminary final for Corowa/Rutherglen with just one brilliant quarter.
Anderson marked strongly and collected a feast of kicks to ensure that Coreen won the flag.
It was Carroll and his brother, Dominic, who paved the way for the win with brilliant first quarters.
Both players were in everything and repeatedly used the ball to full effect.
That enabled Coreen to take a 5.5 to 2.3 lead at quarter time and from that point on, the Swans always held a handy break.
Corowa/Rutherglen opted to give Paul Curren the assignment of tagging Anthony Carroll after the first quarter.
It was a tough assignment and he handled it well, although Carroll continued to have ample influence on the match.
Coreen’s lead at half time was 21 points and it went into the final quarter with a 29 point buffer.
The margin could have been more midway, but Coreen hit the goal post on four occasions.
Early in the third quarter, the Corowa/Rutherglen defence, led by Rick McMaster, Glen Smith and Brent Renshaw, held firm and the Roos did well around the packs.
They had a winner on the wing in Phil Coulston.
But Coreen got two late goals from Mark Smith and Irwin McCartney to set up the decisive break.
One of best pieces of play came early in the last quarter and resulted in a Coreen goal, which put the issue further beyond doubt.
David Darby gathered the ball on the half back flank and moved it briskly to Smith, who eluded two opponents and kicked long to Mark Cook at full forward.
Cook, marked 2m from the goal line and converted from a difficult angle.
Anthony Carroll goaled immediately after and then Cook got his second for the quarter after a superb pass from Carroll.
Corowa/Rutherglen fought the issue out, but lacked the necessary team work and talent.
