Child Protection Policy

Wembley Junior Basketball Club is committed to ensuring that the children in our progam are provided with the safest possible environment to enjoy the game of basketball. The Club is looking to put in place processes to support and protect our members.

The Club and individuals are open to penalties if the following regulations are not adhered to.

The mechanisms that we must adhere to are:

1. Working With Children Check - registered with Wembley, Altona and Westgate and
2. Member Protection Statuatory Declaration set out by Basketball Victoria and
3. Register as a coach or volunteer (Team Managers or others who are in contact with the kids regularly) with Altona through Sporting Pulse.

The club has also appointed a Child Protection officer who at the last update of this page is Megan Vecht.

For any questions, concerns or to report an incident you can report directly to Megan via childsafety@wembleybasketball.com.au.

If you do not get a response in a timely manner from the Child Protection Officer, do not hesitate to escalate to a Committee Member (see the Contact Details page) immediately or to an appropriate authority (See advice below).

As per current advice via the Child Protection Policy from Basketball Victoria:

"Reporting a Concern - All suspicions and allegations MUST be reported appropriately. It is recognised that strong emotions can be aroused particularly in cases where sexual abuse is suspected or where there is misplaced loyalty to a colleague. It is important to understand these feelings but not allow them to interfere with your judgement about any action to take.

Basketball Victoria expects it’s members and staff to discuss any concerns they may have about the welfare of a child IMMEDIATELY with the person in charge and subsequently to check that appropriate action has been taken. If the nominated club welfare officer is not available you should take responsibility and seek advice from the duty officer at your local social services department or the police. Telephone numbers can be found in your local directory."

Download the Member Protection Declaration here. The document notifies who can witness the signing of the declaration. Please use the Assocation Names (Altona and/or Westgate) when filling out the form.
