YEOMAN DEFEATS WANDERERS BY 13 POINTS
The final of the Table Cape Association between Yeoman (minor premiers) and Wanderers (runners-up) took place on the Wynyard recreation ground on Saturday. The weather was perfect, and there was a good attendance for a junior match, the gate takings amounting to £13. The match was exciting from start to finish, Wanderers had slightly the best of matters till three-quarter time, but with a determined last quarter effort Yeoman forged ahead to win by thirteen points.
With a slight wind in their favour, Yeoman had the best of the play, but it was not until 15 minutes after the game had commenced that there was a score – a point to Yeoman. Wanderers' backs were very solid, and were repulsing repeated Yeoman attacks. Biggins was playing a fine game for Wanderers, Marriott had a chance, but mis-kicked the ball, and it went out of bounds. Marking the kick-in, he had another try, and put it into the mouth of the goals, but Ben Jones relieved. The same player effected several good saves in quick succession. Lane added another single for Yeoman. Scores: Yeoman - 2 points; Wanderers - nil.
Yeoman attacked, but Reilly relieved. Arch Webb was playing a sterling game for Yeoman. King was responsible for good play, which placed J.Abblitt in possession within easy scoring distance, and Wanderers' first score went up – a goal. Reeve shortly after had a chance, but the wind carried it wide, a single only resulting. Abblitt marked the kick-in, and returning it, put on another point for Wanderers. Gardam and Webb were Yeoman's best men; while Biggins, Lockett and Jones were Wanderers' outstanding players. From a penalty kick Tom Franks goaled for Yeoman. Dixon was freed, and passed to "Snowy" Reeve who scored the possible for Wanderers. Franks forwarded, and Deayton, securing it right in front, kicked an easy goal. At half time the scores were even, 2.2 all.
Ben Jones, playing back for Wanderers, was effecting some good saves; while Butler's dashes on the wing and coming through with the ball from packs were pleasing to spectators. Lockett was probably the best player on the ground up to this stage. Butler snapped up the ball, and with a nice run along the wing got within scoring distance, and kicked a goal for Wanderers. A single to Yeoman, and a goal only separated the teams. A penalty kick to Marriott gave Yeoman a chance, but a minor only resulted. Tom Franks secured in front and punted a goal. At the final change a point separated the scores, which were: Yeoman 3.4, Wanderers, 3.3.
The last quarter was begun with a slight, wind in favour of Wanderers, but as the term progressed the wind dropped. Each side launched unsuccessful attacks, the majority of the players being on the ball. Deayton took a fine mark within easy distance, and goaled for Yeoman. Wanderers rallied, and King scored a point. Tom Franks took a nice mark well out, and with an accurate kick added a goal for Yeoman. Condition was telling, and the Yeoman men were now dominating the play. A single was scored by Yeoman almost on the bell.
