TABLE CAPE ASSOCIATION - GRAND FINAL
A good game was witnessed on the Wynyard Recreation Ground on Saturday between Wynyard Juniors (minor premiers of the Table Cape Association) and Yeoman, both teams being at full strength.
The contestants appeared to be very evenly matched during the first three quarters and the game was fast and keen, some pretty marking and good kicking being seen on both sides. Wynyard failed, however, to last and during the last term Yeoman had practically all the play, Wynyard breaking through on only a couple of occasions.
There was very little wind and the weather was ideal. The opening exchanges were even and after a few minutes' play in the midfield the home team took up the attack, but failed to score. A couple of marks and several frees against Wynyard enabled the visitors to transfer play to the other end and F Franks opened with a point. C Shepperd took a good mark and added another single. A free kick to Evans was well placed and enabled Kerr to open Wynyard's score with a single and Roberts-Thomson followed this up a minute later with a goal from a free kick. Yeoman returned to the attack and Shadbolt took a beautiful mark from Wragg, but only a point resulted, another single being added for Yeoman almost immediately. A free to Dowling on the boundary gave Wynyard another goal and the quarter scores were:- Wynyard 2.1, Yeoman 0.4.
Yeoman were the first to add to their score after the change, a single being followed by a long spell of fast play up and down the oval, both sides showing the best form seen during the match. The visitors then began to show to advantage and after A Deayton had scored a major from an angle kick, four points were added in quick succession, placing the visitors a couple of points in the lead. Wynyard tried hard but Yeoman came back and Deayton again raised the twin flags. Abblitt added a point for Wynyard, just on time, when scores were: Yeoman 2.9, Wynyard 2.2.
The play during the third quarter continued fast and keen. Wynyard secured a point and at the other end F Franks snapped a sixer. The home team retaliated a minute later, Hartley raising both flags. Both ends were visited several times in turn; then Shadbolt scored a major out of the scrum. Another point to Yeoman and Taylor put through from a difficult position, but the ball was touched in transit and only a point resulted. The scores at the last change being:- Yeoman 4.10, Wynyard 3.4.
For the remainder of the game Wynyard were a beaten team and goals were scored by Shadbolt, Shepperd and Hayward, as well as a single before Wynyard broke away and scored a point. Yeoman again took up the attack and Wragg scored a splendid goal, then later Shadbolt got one through on the ground. Wynyard got away with a couple of minutes to go and scored a point just before the bell, the final scores being:- Yeoman 9.11, Wynyard 3.6.
K Carrick (Burnie) had charge of the game and put up an excellent performance, keeping the play well open and under control right through.
For the winners, the most conspicuous players were C Shepperd, A Deayton, Gale, Shadbolt, Fleming, Clingeliffer, Wragg and F Franks.
For Wynyard the pick were Kerr, Scolyer, Evans, Harrison, Hartley, McKendrick, Butler and Abblitt.
