PINES CLUB NOTES. Round 1. YCW v Pines. 5 April 2014
One week it’s cricket, the next it’s footy. Congrats to our cricketers who recently earned the right to now compete in the top division, Provincial. It’s an exciting year for our footy club too as we celebrate and remember our 50 years of playing existence being 1964-2013. We are using this year as our celebration year though and also to satisfy those who maintain that 1964+50 is 2014. Confused? Don’t be, just feel free to join in. Most of us will know by now of the mid-year celebration dinner. This well received event now has only a few tickets left. Further to all that, we say welcome to one and all as we prepare to go, at least, that little bit further and to be, at least, just that little bit better this season. May the improvement of last year be the catalyst to what you can do this season. Steve Ryan will continue as Senior coach and Will Casey will do likewise with our Thirds. New chum on the coaching panel is Mitch Pepper who will take over as Reserves coach from Gordon Hendry who has been in charge of the team for the last two years. Don’t worry, the big fella, in his 29th year, will still be playing and with 461 club games (323sr, 138res) to his name it’s not hard to work out what he’s aiming for now. Trav Pastuska, Russ Harris and Judy Stephens will continue in their respective roles of President, Secretary and Treasurer. A very warm welcome (back) to Lea Morse who will be Assist. Secretary. End Max allowable copy ends now. The Last Bud.
PINES CLUB NOTES. Round 2. Pines v Langwarrin. 12 April 2014
Perusing the Ins and Outs in the local media recently your scribe has concluded that we must have the most settled team in the league. None in and one out. That’s neatly done. This listof players last week had the privilege to once again wear our traditional jumper, a style in design and colours that is unique, throughout the whole of Australia, to our club. The jumper has been seen on some special occasions over the last few years but now it is here permanently and we love it. A well known Moorooduc school teacher recently stated-“Cartoon characters on footy jumpers are so yesterday”. Sad to say, this great jumper could not bring us any victories over the Stones. Seniors were slow out of the gate but got a bit brighter by citrus time. YC then slammed on 10gls leaving us 86pts in deficit. Best-L.Pizzey, J.Wheeler and A.Maling. Reserves could only manage 1gl per qtr losing by 73 pts. Best-D.Scerri, Gord Hendry and S.Doyle. Luke Bartlett kicked 2 gls. Thirds braved the inevitable but copped a 154pt defeat for their efforts. Best-R.Uncle, M.Puok and J.Boyle. Hello to the Langaroos for our first home games and wins this year. New player Jayden Luca (son of Steve) last week became our 1000th club player. Well done JayL. A big welcome to our major sponsor Mark at Dunsford Financial. Shaun White, in his 7th season, today plays his 100th club game. Well done Whitey. These club notes can now be seen on line. The Last Bud.
PINES CLUB NOTES. Round 3. Pines v Chelsea. 26 April 2014
Today we honour Anzac Day, remembering those who served, fought and gave their lives that we may live to be as free as we are. Lest we forget. As part of our 50 year celebrations, this column will try to bring to you some snippets from our past, some quizzes and maybe some classic anecdotes. Here’s a quick quiz- ‘Who was the only senior team that Pines were never able to beat?’ Last round; the band of Pines Past Players who gathered for the first of this year’s functions could only watch (of course) as our Seniors just couldn’t get the better of the Langaroos. There were at times only the matter of a few points difference in the scores but the final siren blew a 32 pt dearth. Best- Guy Hendry (3gls), A.Ludewig, J.Messina. Reserves, 7 goals down at qtr time and with six of the selected team altered or outed, then matched the Roos goal for goal but fell to a 51 pt loss. Best-J.Prosser (2gls), Gord Hendry, D.Scerri. Good to see our Thirds team basically unchanged from the week before. Shows that the lads are sticking together. Not a good game result for them though. Best- B.Burt, N.Lineham, D.Ryan. Welcome today to Chelsea, one of our hardest opponents over the years. Many players have worn the colours of both clubs but did you know that the first known of these can be traced back to 1967. Although a long serving and famous name at Chelsea, he played 34 snr gms in 2 years at Pines. He lived for a time on our Pines Estate. Who was he? And it’s not Possum. The Last Bud.
PINES CLUB NOTES. Round 4. Mt Eliza v Pines. 3 May 2014
What a terrific effort by our seniors in defeating Chelsea last week as it has been a little dismal, like the match day weather, over the last few weeks and this is just the morale lifter and warmer that we need, yeah all round the place. The overheard in the crowd comment of –“no-one comes to the footy anymore” might improve too. Our team was relentless in attack and doubled the Gull’s goals to win by 45pts. Best; Jake Berry, Shaun White (3gls) and Lachlan Pizzey. Reserves game was odd in that after we kept Chelsea scoreless in the first term they did the same thing to us in the second. Scores then remained level for a qtr (I think) until the Gulls broke away to take home a 37pt win. Young Rhys Chalkley (son of Barrie) needed hospital attention for a nasty head injury. Hoping that he is ok as we go to print. Best; Jean Bezzene, Gordon Hendry and Dave McLaren. Our previously unaltered Thirds team this time sported a number of u.16 lads who helped the team produce it’s best effort this year. Best; Jordan Frawley, Joshua Howe-Moloney and Majok Puok. This column cannot bring you the long awaited news (again) that Simon Bishop will play his 175th club game today as he is injured (again). Maybe next week Bish (again). Will Casey was set to play his 200th club game today but alas, all the king’s horses and all the king’s men won’t get Will back out there today. The 50 year quizzes, quotes and anecdotes have been reduced due to lack of public interest. Today, if you look around you, you’ll find we are at Mt Eliza. Many people have it as a mindset that we first met the Mounties when we went into the then MPFL in 1984. Not so, Mt E. versed us in the old NFL but only for one year in the reserves (1966) and in the seniors and thirds in 1967. They then went into the then MPFL. They too seem to have forgotten this. Their home venue wasn’t where you are now so where was it? Nice to hear from Mick Hobgen recently. Mick started in u.12 and worked his way through to playing in our 1976 senior Prem team. Hope you enjoy England ‘Hobbo’. The Last Bud.
PINES CLUB NOTES. Round 6. Bonbeach v Pines. 17 May 2014
This column may as well talk about it too, everybody else is. News has filtered through to this desk that Stephen Ryan has been selected as the Pen Lge Interleague Senior coach. This follows his successful appointment last year. More on this evergreen champ coming soon. Pines players invited to the squad are Guy Hendry, Lachlan Pizzey, Jamie Messina and Beau Hendry. Good luck men. Simon Bishop did get to play last week and all going well we should see him play his 175th club life member game today. It’s been a long time coming for him with even this year and the end of last year falling down around him. Then there’s the seven year sabbatical that he took. Well done Simon with your 29sr,146rs gms (1997-2014). Seniors last week took full advantage of the ‘down in the dumps’ Bulls by displaying some speedy football and raced home to a 76pt victory. Apart from the early pre 1983 NFL slaughters of Karingal, this is Pines’ third highest win margin since 1997. The others are 94 and 82pts. Best; Shaun White (5gls), Jack Wheeler (3gls) and Luke Houldcroft. Jamie Messina also kicked 3gls. Young Jean Bezzene fared well in his first Senior game. Our Reserves team still had to call on our supposedly non-playing Senior coach (methinks that he just can’t stop himself from getting out there) and although a good score with a 72pt win was seen by our team it wasn’t all easy as the Bulls gave well of themselves but were disallowed from scoring by a combo of experience and younger fitter players. Best; Gord Hendry, Josh Wilcox (son of Rob)(4gls) and Patrick Jackson (nephew of Fiona). Bad day for our Thirds again and it’s a shame that their efforts and pride cannot be calculated as a scoreboard value. Best; Bailey Burt (son of Ken), Dean Berry (son of Jim) and Brodie Phelan. The 50 year quizzes, quotes and anecdotes have been promoted to now being seen on the fish n chip shop notice board so here’s one for you; It took 7 years for Pines to defeat this team after first playing them in our very first game (Rd 1,1964). They were also the last team that we ever played in the old NFL. Who were they? Three lads playing for the MPJFL U’14 Interleague team are Bailey Williams, Campbell Hustwaite and Sam McDonald. The Pines dads there are Paul, Mark and Tim. Good work men (and Mums). The Last Bud.
PINES CLUB NOTES. Round 7. Pines v Seaford. 31 May 2014
A bad day for Steve Ryan’s Peninsula Interleague team last Sat v Geelong and all we can say is better luck next year. Your scribe was handballed a question recently. How many games of footy has Steve Ryan played (all time). You’ve come to the right place for the answer but it all depends on what is relevant. Firstly, Steve has played 377 senior games (seven club’s first 18) to date. He has also played 60 AFL reserves games and 52 AFL thirds games and you can add 6 Pines reserves games to that. It is not known if he has played any reserves games elsewhere. Adding these all together we get 495. Do I hear the magic number 500 mentioned? Interleague games cannot be added in as they are not considered to be club games. Some clubs think otherwise. It is archived that Gary Evans (Drom, Rose, Rye, Sorr and others) played 536 games (1964-89). This also was at mixed levels and grades. Seniors received a reality check v Bonbeach last round going from 10pts down at qtr time to 88pts down at the end. Young Josh Wilcox got his first snr game and teamed well with his bro Nick. Best; Matt Goodman, Harley Parker and Steve Taylor. Reserves couldn’t assert enough strength in another rugged game and flopped by 30pts. Best; Jean Bezzene, Matt Dyer and Gord Hendry. Another 20 goal defeat for our Thirds (10th) and it wasn’t by a highly placed team either but by ninth placed Bonbeach. Once again we had the team struggling to field a full side. Thank you to the u’16 lads who come along each week to help out. Best; Majok Puok (bro of Chotnyang (u’14) and Kuok (u’16), Bailey Burt (son of Ken) and Dean Berry (bro of Jake). Welcome to our neighbours Seaford for what some are calling ‘a rivalry round’ which is a link to the ‘rivalry luncheon’ being held today. Terry Daniher will talk. The Last Bud.
PINES CLUB NOTES. Round 8. Edi Asp v Pines. 7 June 2014
It has been a long hard road that we have travelled to get to do what we do tonight and that is to celebrate the 50 year existence of Pines Football Club (1964-13) now known as Pines Football Netball Club. The original name of the club was the Pines Forest Sports Association and this covered many sports all year round eg footy in winter, cricket in summer. A lot of work has been put in to make sure that tonight is a success and that the 337 who are attending can enjoy themselves without any upsets. A good cross section of people and players from our years will be gathering and it doesn’t take much to imagine the stories and yarns that will fill the room. Players from our very first game will be in attendance right on through to our current footballers and netballers of who will get to see images and highlights of our club from when we first struggled in our infancy through to marching on to and through our great years. Those not attending tonight may like to join in at our rooms tomorrow from 11am. Winless Seaford left us at the gates by kicking 7 goals straight in the first qtr and set up a buffer that we just could not breast, the result being a 20pt loss. Best; Beau & Guy Hendry and Jamie Messina (3gls). Reserves showed some flashes of hope in another rugged game but still had their score doubled failing by 42pts. Best; Gord Hendry, Jarrod Stewart and Dave McLaren. Another 20 plus goal defeat for our Thirds and I do wish that I could write of something better. Keep trying boys. Best; Rhys Uncle, Dean Berry and Bayley Burt. Thank you to the u’16 lads Kyall, Khallum and Jordan who came along to help their mates out. A good ‘rivalry luncheon’ with guest speaker Terry Daniher was enjoyed by about 81 people last week while the other 441at the ground could only watch with their noses pushed up against the window pane. Yes, the unofficial gate figure was 522, a good sign that the local derby has made a comeback and is alive and kicking. The Last Bud.
PINES CLUB NOTES. Round 9. Pines v Mornington. 14 June 2014
If any of you are still around in another 50 years please tell those future people that they have got a lot to beat if they are seeking to find a better night than what was enjoyed by all last Saturday. The 340 people there came from near and far, all with the sole purpose of happily enjoying the celebration of the 50 year life of our club. And what a night it was, it really was, such a night. Well done to the function organisers of whose patience, wit, common sense and mental stability got us to the night and through it. A big thank you to Frankston Council for their assistance at the Arts Centre including the Arts Centre worker (a certain Bonbeach player) who stated at stumps that we are the biggest and best behaved crowd that they have ever had. Bring on another 50 years, we’ll do it all again. Earlier that day at Regent Park, Edi Asp sent our Seniors off with a 24pt loss. An after game comment heard was-“we just lack that extra bit of class so as to finish off stronger in the last qtr”. This column finds that we have kicked an average of 20 last qtr pts while we have had an average of 34 kicked against us. We have been the better last qtr scorer in only 2 out of 8 games. Best; Beau & Guy Hendry and Matt Goodman. Can’t decipher the Reserves game scoreline (again) but we do see that Pines were snuffed out by 7pts. Shame to lose a close one, there hasn’t been too many of them. Best; Chris Guganovic, Jarrod Stewart and Jake Prosser. Jason Morse (son of Lea), in only his second game since 2011, kicked 3 of our 8 goals and let’s hope that Chris G. with another BOG here gets back to his normal Senior team duties soon. Our u16/18 lads could only manage 2 gls as the Eagles thirds went through the mechanics of methodically scoring 6 gls per qtr. Best; No details supplied. Happy birthday Saturday to ‘The Dude’ aka ‘Cowboy’. Now I know how old he is. The Last Bud.
