PINES CLUB NOTES. Round 6. Bonbeach v Pines. 17 May 2014
This column may as well talk about it too, everybody else is. News has filtered through to this desk that Stephen Ryan has been selected as the Pen Lge Interleague Senior coach. This follows his successful appointment last year. More on this evergreen champ coming soon. Pines players invited to the squad are Guy Hendry, Lachlan Pizzey, Jamie Messina and Beau Hendry. Good luck men. Simon Bishop did get to play last week and all going well we should see him play his 175th club life member game today. It’s been a long time coming for him with even this year and the end of last year falling down around him. Then there’s the seven year sabbatical that he took. Well done Simon with your 29sr,146rs gms (1997-2014). Seniors last week took full advantage of the ‘down in the dumps’ Bulls by displaying some speedy football and raced home to a 76pt victory. Apart from the early pre 1983 NFL slaughters of Karingal, this is Pines’ third highest win margin since 1997. The others are 94 and 82pts. Best; Shaun White (5gls), Jack Wheeler (3gls) and Luke Houldcroft. Jamie Messina also kicked 3gls. Young Jean Bezzene fared well in his first Senior game. Our Reserves team still had to call on our supposedly non-playing Senior coach (methinks that he just can’t stop himself from getting out there) and although a good score with a 72pt win was seen by our team it wasn’t all easy as the Bulls gave well of themselves but were disallowed from scoring by a combo of experience and younger fitter players. Best; Gord Hendry, Josh Wilcox (son of Rob)(4gls) and Patrick Jackson (nephew of Fiona). Bad day for our Thirds again and it’s a shame that their efforts and pride cannot be calculated as a scoreboard value. Best; Bailey Burt (son of Ken), Dean Berry (son of Jim) and Brodie Phelan. The 50 year quizzes, quotes and anecdotes have been promoted to now being seen on the fish n chip shop notice board so here’s one for you; It took 7 years for Pines to defeat this team after first playing them in our very first game (Rd 1,1964). They were also the last team that we ever played in the old NFL. Who were they? Three lads playing for the MPJFL U’14 Interleague team are Bailey Williams, Campbell Hustwaite and Sam McDonald. The Pines dads there are Paul, Mark and Tim. Good work men (and Mums). The Last Bud.
