PINES CLUB NOTES. Round 13. Pines v Mt Eliza. 19 July 2014
Excellent turnout for our Sponsors and Legends Luncheon which was bolstered by the 1994 Prem Teams reunionists who all listened to guest speaker Tony Jewell and others and then more others who then all sang Happy Birthday to Barry Moore before they all ate his 70th year birthday cake. Some may have read the article in the local paper recently re the fact that it has been calculated that an amount of 55% of all 2013 Peninsula League Thirds, having become of age, did not register to play in this current year. The situ is not quite as bad at Pines where we had only 14% not follow on from last year into this year’s older teams. Since 2000 we have had an average of 27% of our lads drop out after finishing in the Thirds and the overall figure since our first year is not bad either. We have used a total of 1500 players since 1964 and of that 1000 have played snr/res games so giving us a 33% footprint. This is a general figure as not all of that 1000 would have come through our younger teams. The old accepted story has always been that the young men get other interests and stop playing. Methinks that there is more to it than just that. The only game in town last Sat got us the only three losses in town. YCW, winners by 57pts were snappy, strong and played to expectance whilst pressuring Pines to the hilt. Eleven scoring shots by Pines for a total of 21pts in a low scoring game was not happy. Best; Joel Brunn, Beau Hendry and Shaun White. Reserves kicked their best total in the last term but went down by 30pts after being nearly double that amount in arrears at times. Best; Shaun McPherson, Adam McPherson and Gordon Hendry. Thirds held the SCats to a 20gl margin. Have seen worse times. Keep at it men. Best; Jayden Goldsmith, Cody McSweeney and Rhys Uncle. Good to see V.Pres Terry Spalding has come on board as your historian’s aide-de-camp. In an exclusive statement to this column he quipped- “I still can’t wait to start my 15 year apprenticeship after my probation period is over”. Thanks also to Terry for being my incognito ‘one-legged’ roving reporter during my detox. The Last Bud.
