At the Annual General Meeting of the Association held on 7 December 2006, Darrel Luck (President) (pictured) and Phil Stone (former Committee member) were elected as Life Members of the NCCUA.
Darrel Luck who will soon be reaching the milestone of 100 Black Diamond Cup games in the 2007 BDAFL season has umpired 5 Black Diamond Cup Grand Finals since the inception of the BDAFL in 2000. Former member of the Sydney AFL umpiring panel rejoined the group back in 2004 with former Umpires coach Grant Godfrey.
"For me it is an overwhelming accolade to be given the highest honour that members of the Association can grant to umpires in the area," Luck said. "I'm certainly humbled by this and thank members for this award and the continued opportunity to again represent them as President of the Association for another 12 months in 2007."
Phil Stone has been actively recruiting junior umpires over the last number of seasons for the Newcastle AFLGSJ competition, which eventually should help with the umpire shortage in the BDAFL. Phil also has umpired the 2004 Black Diamond Cup Grand Final, 2005 and 2006 BDAFL Under 18's Grand Final and was a worthy recipient of the Life Membership award.
The Office Bearers and Committee members elected at Wednesday nights meeting for 2007 were:
Darrel Luck - President
Roy Reichert - Vice President and AFLGSJ (Newcastle) representative
Richard Cornish - Secretary
Emily Reichert - Assistant Secretary
Neville Turner - Treasurer
Grant Godfrey - Committee Member
Lee Gardener - Committee Member
Also present at the Annual General Meeting was President of the BDAFL, Mr Ian Granland OAM. President Granland outlined the outcomes of a meeting of the Board on Monday 13 November 2006 where Graham Glassford (NSW Umpiring Development Manager), Grant Godfrey, Darrel Luck and Roger Crowhurst were in attendance to discuss the future of umpiring in the BDAFL for 2007 and onwards.
The major focus of the Board meeting was to resolve umpiring issues, which includes recruitment/retention of umpries and President Granland indicated the priority of using Club Umpires to fill the gaps in the First Division competition was imperative. He also set out some of the initiatives the BDAFL are considering implementing in the 2007 competition.
