Improving Magpies give City the Blues
Last week saw us host Newcastle City in all grades at picturesque "Maggies Nest", Tacoma Oval. The conditions were perfect for playing footy and it was pleasing to see a large crowd turn up to support the boys.
The 18's came up against a very strong City side and unfortunately we weren't able to match it with them. City were too strong around the ground but to our guys credit, they never gave up trying. Best players were the Barrie boys, Brent Ede, Mitch Starkey, Jacob Dunne and Ty Orford-Glapa.
Our slow start was again the difference in the First Division game as we failed to register a goal until the third quarter. We weren't able to capitalise on our opportunities when we had the ball in our forward line. Our back line worked tirelessly with Kris Clouten leading the way at Centre Half Back who continually backed himself to drive the ball forward. It wasn't until the third quarter that we decided to play footy and somewhat got ourselves back into the match but in the end the slow start cost us and City took the spoils. Wilko was rewarded for his performance of the year with the mug. Others that stood out were Kris Clouten, Nick Mundey and Shannon Colbourne.
The Black Diamond Cup game was an exciting and closely contested affair. The biggest margin at any of the breaks was eight points and an upset was on the cards. Unfortunately some dubious umpiring decisions late in the final quarter put paid to an upset. The large crowd on hand very vocal in their disapproval. Still it was a great game of footy for the most part and we matched it with the Blues on every account. Coach Laksa although disappointed with the end result was happy with the commitment and intensity shown by his squad and is now looking forward to our next clash in two weeks time against the Marlins. Young under 16 player Ty Orford-Glapa, who I mentioned in last weeks report as being a future First Grader, got his first taste of First Grade footy. Billy Denniss, who doesn't always get the credit he deserves, won the mug for his gutsy performance and important goals.
With First Grade having the bye this weekend, both the 18's and First Division travel up to No. 1 to try to reverse last weekend's results.
